Brogden Makes More History at N.C. Senior Women's Amateur

Five-time N.C. Senior Women's Amateur champion, Pat Brogden

SALISBURY, N.C. (May 1, 2018) -- Final results of the Carolinas Golf Association's 15^th North Carolina Senior Women's Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Salisbury in Salisbury, N.C. on Tuesday, May 1 (Par 36-36--72, 5,488 Yards, Course/Slope Rating 72.1/124).

Trailing by five strokes at the start of the final round, defending champion Pat Brogden of Garner played in the penultimate grouping. At the turn, Brogden learned that each player in the lead grouping was over par for the day. Propelled by the knowledge, Brogden converted three birdies on her inward nine en route to a one-under 35. She punctuated her round by holing a birdie from off the green on No. 18 to card three-over 75 and 12-over 156 for the championship.   

"I thought I needed that shot on 18 to maybe get to a playoff," Brogden said. As it turned out, that shot just served to increase her margin of victory to four shots. Her 13 overall CGA titles rank third all-time among Carolinas women.

Last year, Brogden set the 36-hole scoring record for this championship. With this win, her fifth in the event, Brogden now holds the most North Carolina Senior Women's Amateur titles, breaking a tie at four wins with Patty Moore of Charlotte.

"Anytime you're the only of something it's certainly special," said Brogden. "It may only last a year," she added with a wry smile, "but I'm going to enjoy it."

First-round leader Angela Stewart of Greenville posted an 84 to finished tied for second with Kathy Binkley of Cornelius at 156.

2005 champion Dianne Yelovich of Pinehurst won both the Carolinas Division and low Super Senior award (65+) for the second consecutive year. The Carolinas Division plays a shorter course. Yelovich earned the Carolinas Division crown by virtue of a scorecard playoff. Tied after 36 holes at 155, her even-par 36 on the back nine at the Country Club of Salisbury was two strokes better than first-round leader Sook Hee Yang of Jamestown.

 
The North Carolina Senior Women's Amateur Championship is contested at 36 holes of stroke play with a Championship division and a Carolinas division (shorter course). Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 50th birthday, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the CGA and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club.
