Brogden Completes the Four-Peat

 

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (May 18, 2021) -- Final results of the 17th North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Highland Country Club in Fayetteville, N.C. on May 18, 2021. The championship division competed at 5,350 yards and the Carolinas division competed at 5,035 yards (par 36-36--72).

Pat Brogden of Garner, N.C. defended her championship title at the 17th North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Highland Country Club. Brogden has won this event seven times, in 2007, 2010, 2012, 2017, 2018, 2019 and now 2021. 


Entering the final round on Tuesday morning, Brogden had a three-stroke lead over her playing partner, Brenda Kuehn of Asheville, N.C. Kuehn, who finished fourth at the 16th playing of this event, opened her round with an even-par outward nine, and so did Brogden, which kept Kuehn three strokes shy of the leader at the turn. In her outward nine, Brogden capitalized on the par-5s with birdies on Nos. 4 and 6, but also bogeyed Nos. 5 and 8. 


Brogden’s margin was reduced on No. 11. She bogeyed the par-3 and Kuehn parred. “Well I had a three-stroke lead, which is way more comfortable than being three behind,” Brogden said. “Three is nothing though, one hole can completely turn that around. Just tried to do what I always do, which is hit fairways and greens. It was hard to do that here.”


Brogden’s strength was showcased in her short game. “I can’t even count how many times I got an up and down,” the 15-time CGA champion remarked. “My short game has won me many tournaments. I try to work on that as often as I can.”


Knowing what needed to be done, Brogden went on a birdie spree, carding sub-par scores on Nos. 13 and 14. At this point in the final round, Brogden held a five-stroke lead. To add an exclamation on her seventh win at the North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, Brogden birdied No. 18 to finish with a total score of even-par, 144. Kuehn claimed runner-up with a 6-over-par, 150 overall finish.


“I never would have thought I would have been able to accomplish this,” said the gracious champion. “I battled cancer earlier in my life. To me this is just golf, but I have my spirit in me that won’t let me stop. So I’m going to fight until the very end.” 


Sook Hee Yang of Jamestown, N.C. finished in third place with a score of 13-over-par, 157 total. Yang shot a 5-over-par, 77 in her final round. Patty Moore of Pinehurst, N.C. finished in fourth place with a 17-over-par, 161 overall finish. Moore is a four-time North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur Champion and four-time runner-up.


After tight competition in the Carolinas division, Lori Teague of Taylorsville, N.C. won a scorecard playoff to take home the division honors with a two-day total score of 23-over-par, 167. Teague tied with Tammy Johnson of Taylorsville, N.C who also finished 23-over-par, 167, but ultimately claimed runner-up after a second-round scorecard playoff. Julie Shore of Raleigh, N.C. finished one-stroke behind the lead with a two-day total score of 24-over-par, 168. Shore finished third place in the Carolinas division, but took home low super senior honors.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
