Adams Victorious In Sudden Death Playoff

 

DURHAM, N.C. (July 29, 2021) -- Final Round results from the 72nd Carolinas Junior Boys’ Championship at Treyburn Country Club, in Durham, N.C. on July 29, 2021. The field competed at 7,126 yards (36-36--72).

On what proved to be a tumultuous and dramatic concluding day to the 72nd Carolinas Junior Boys’, Collin Adams of Charlotte, N.C. took home the hardware in the final junior golf event of his career. 

 

“I was very happy to win,” said Adams. “I knew today would be the last time I’d ever be playing in a junior tournament so I wanted it a bit more. I started off not great today but kind of got it going later in the round.”

 

Squaring off against Will Conway of Weddinton, N.C. and Kyle Haas of Winston-Salem, N.C., in a sudden death playoff with all three competitors finishing with a 54 hole total of 5-under-par, Adams stayed steady, especially when faced with adversity. 

 

“I finished the round with a couple bogeys so I wasn’t too happy about that,” said Adams. “I was in the playoff so I just had to kind of reset and I made three big putts in the playoff to close it out.” 

 

On his first playoff hole the Par-4 18th at Treyburn Country Club, Adams was a bit strong on his approach, leading to an awkward pitch shot off the back of the green. His response was to almost hole the pitch, although his chip would run out on Treyburn’s fast BentGrass Greens. 

 

However, a 12 foot par save kept Adams alive and moving forward in the playoff. After Adams and Conway both rolled in clutch birdies on the Par-4 first hole, they moved to the tee of the 197 yard Par-3 2nd, the third playoff hole of the Championship. 

 

“What’s funny was I didn’t really make anything all day,” said Adams. “The first one was probably the hardest here on 18. Once I saw that go in I got a burst of confidence in the putter. That helped me make the next two for birdie.”

 

Conway’s tee shot hit just past the pin and rolled out to around five feet, putting the pressure directly on Adams. Adams would once again answer the bell, sticking his approach into the third playoff hole to about eight feet. After sizing up his putt, Adams put a pure roll on the ball and sunk his eight footer to come away with a dazzling victory. 

 

“After Will stuck it to a few feet I knew I had to put it close,” said Adams. “I put it close enough to give myself a shot and I was lucky enough to make mine and that’s how things ended.” 

 

Ethan Paschal of Fayetteville, N.C. and Keenan Royalty of Raleigh, N.C. round out the top five, finishing tied for fourth at 4-under-par.
