Acrey Takes Home 57th Twin States Junior Girls' Championship Win

LAKE LURE, N.C. (June 22, 2023) -- Final round results from the 57th Twin States Junior Girls’ Championship at Rumbling Bald Apple Valley Course in Lake Lure, North Carolina on June 22, 2023.

Ellie Acrey of Winston-Salem, N.C. took home the 57th Twin States Junior Girls’ Championship this week at Rumbling Bald Apple Valley Course in Lake Lure, North Carolina. The tournament in its original format was intended to be two rounds of 18-hole stroke play over two days. However, after multiple rain delays and being unable to play Round 1 on Wednesday due to weather, the tournament only consisted of one 18-hole round on Thursday. Acrey, along with the rest of the field, persevered through weather delays, wet course conditions, and heavy downpours to finish the tournament strong.

 

The Lake Lure area saw a lot of rain and a flash flood warning over the days leading up to the tournament, and the rain continued through Wednesday and Thursday. The amount of rain added to the difficulty of the course, causing slower greens and some temporary water.  The tough course conditions forced players to fight for every shot. 

 

“I drove the ball well and making short putts was key today. With the wet course conditions, I wanted to play it a little bit safer and not do anything crazy,” stated Acrey. 

 

To capture the championship, Acrey shot a two-over-par, 74. After three bogeys on the front nine, Acrey was motivated to make putts and strike the ball well, putting herself towards the top of the leaderboard. Acrey held the lead through the majority of the round with 10 pars and three birdies. Acrey’s consistent play on the back nine helped her to maintain the lead through the finish. 

 

Hallie Wilson of Lewisville, N.C. was hot on her trail finishing in second, only one stroke behind Acrey with a score of 75. Wilson had an impressive day with four birdies and nine pars. 

 

With the delays and weather, it was important to have mental toughness and perseverance in order to gain and carry momentum throughout the round. Acrey’s mindset was to make sure she played to the best of her ability today because she knew she didn’t have another round to make it up. 

 

There was a two-way tie for third between Karsyn Roberts of Pikeville, N.C., and Ansley Bryson of Seneca, S.C. The players tied for third at five-over-par, 77.
