Four-Ball Partners Face-Off at Mid-Am

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Second round results of the 35th Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship held on North Ridge Country Club's Lakes course in Raleigh, N.C. on Saturday, April 18, 2015. Par 36-36--72, 6,600 yards (Course Rating: 72.9/134).

Atop the leaderboard going into the final round are Sherrill Britt of West End, N.C. and Greg Earnhardt of Greensboro, N.C. The first week in May, the two men will be partners in the inaugural U.S. Four-Ball at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, California. They shot 66 in the qualifier on the Holly course at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C. to make the field. On Sunday, they will play together in the final group at the 35th Carolinas Mid-Amateur.

Britt followed-up his opening round six-under-par 66 with a five-under-par 67 that included five birdies and an eagle. "Tougher day today," Britt said. "I was six-under-par through 13 holes but lost it coming in." After a bogey-free first round, today Britt made two bogeys. He has a three-shot lead sitting at 11-under-par 133 for the championship.

Earnhardt fought his way into second place with his own six-under-par 66. He is looking forward to being paired with Britt in the final group, "He deserves to win a CGA event," said Earnhardt. "If I can't win, I want him to win." Combined with a two-under-par 70, Earnhardt is at eight-under-par 136.

The round of the day came from 33-year-old Tee Opperman of Pawleys Island, S.C. who made eight birdies and an eagle en route to an eight-under-par 64. After posting two-over-par 74 in the first round, Opperman was able to best that by ten shots. "The only difference from yesterday, I kept the driving in play," he said. "Then, I made [every putt] I looked at."

The next Carolinas Mid-Amateur champion likely will be a new CGA winner. Each player in the final group is chasing their first title. Tied for fifth at five-under-par 139 are 2009 Four-Ball champion Chris Eaves of Burgaw, N.C. and Ron Kirkpatrick of Charlotte, N.C. 2014 champion Matthew Crenshaw of Burlington, N.C. is not defending his title as he is recovering from wrist surgery and hopes to return to competitive golf this summer.
