Sherrill Britt, a 50 year-old contractor from West, N.C. holds the lead after a six-under-par 66. His bogey-free round included four birdies and an 100-yard hole-out for eagle on the par-4 14th. The key to his low round was avoiding bogeys, "When I hit a bad tee shot, I [still] had an opening," Britt commented, "I think I only missed three greens." He is seeking his first Carolinas Golf Association championship title, having finished runner-up multiple times.
In a tournament for men ages 30 and older, Parks Price of Taylorsville, N.C., who turned 30 one day prior to the start of the championship, is in second at four-under-par 68. Four players are tied for third place at 3-under-par.
Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C., a four-time Carolinas Mid-Amateur champion had a costly double-bogey on the 17th hole and finished his round at even-par.
2014 champion Matthew Crenshaw of Burlington, N.C. is not defending his title as he is recovering from wrist surgery and hopes to return to competitive golf this summer.
The second round will be at 7:50am with all players beginning play from the 1st tee. Tee times & Pairings
The Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship format is 54 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 60 scores and ties. Entry is open to any male golfer who has reached his 30th birthday by April 17, 2015, is a legal resident of North or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a member club that does not exceed 5.4.
