Robinson's 68 Setting the Pace at Carolinas Senior Amateur

GREENSBORO, N.C. – First round results of the 53rd Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship hosted by Sedgefield Country Club (Dye Course) in Greensboro, N.C. on Wednesday, September 24, 2014 (6350 yards, par 35-36—71, 71.7,136).
2007 North Carolina Mid-Amateur Champion Gary Robinson of Fayetteville, N.C. fired a three-under par 68 to stand atop the leaderboard after 18 holes at the Pete Dye designed layout. Battling afternoon rain, wind and a bad back, the 55-year-old Robinson somehow managed to card four birdies and an eagle against three bogeys. “I just found a way to keep the ball in play coming down the stretch,” Robinson noted about playing with an ailing back.
Two strokes behind Robinson are the only other two players that managed to break par in round one: Jim Grainger, 58, of Charlotte, N.C. and Ben Whipple, 61, of Marietta, S.C.
Two-time defending champion Rick Cloninger, 57, of Rock Hill, S.C. opened with a four-over 75 and stands in a tie for 15th place. Cloninger is fresh off a semifinal finish at the U.S. Senior Amateur played in California last week.
The average score in round one was 79.7 with most of the day played in misty rain and windy conditions. Traditionally a par 70 layout, the 10th hole is being played as a 477-yard par five for this event changing par to 71.
The championship is comprised of 54-holes of stroke play. After Thursday’s round, the field of 113 players will be cut to the low 60 scores and ties for the final round on Friday. Second round tee times will begin Thursday at 8:15am from the 1st and 10th holes.

The Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who reached his 55th birthday by today, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 10.4.
This event is one of 40 championships conducted annually by the Carolinas Golf Association, which is in its 105th year of serving amateur golf in the Carolinas.
