Three Tied for Lead After First Round of N.C. Mid-Amateur Championship
DURHAM, N.C. – First round results of the 21st North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship hosted by Old Chatham GC in Durham, N.C. on Friday, September 19, 2014 (6900 yards, par 36-36—72, 73.7,132).
Joe Jaspers, 48, of Huntersville, Korky Kemp, 39, of Greensboro, and Banks Wood, Jr., 31, of Charlotte share the lead at three-under par 69 after 18 holes of competition. After starting three-over par in his first four holes, Wood rallied with four straight birdies. “I was able to keep my focus for four hours today”, he commented. “With the greens the speed they are, you really benefit from being on the correct side of the hole.”
Defending champion Jeff Allen of Jacksonville was in a familiar pairing today with Scott Harvey of Greensboro and Matthew Crenshaw of Burlington. In last year’s championship, Allen beat Harvey and Crenshaw in a three-way playoff with a birdie on the second hole. Today their group struggled to make birdies, with a total of seven among them. Harvey posted a one-under par 71, Crenshaw is at even par and Allen is at five-over par 77.
The average age of the 125 players in this year’s field is 43-years-old. Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who reached his 30th birthday by today, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 5.4.
The championship is comprised of 54-holes of stroke play. After Saturday’s round, the field will be cut to the low 60 scores and ties for the final round on Sunday. Second round tee times will begin Saturday at 8:00am from the 1st and 10th holes.
