14th North Carolina Senior Four-Ball Championship Heads to Greenville CC

WEST END, NC -- The Carolinas Golf Association's 14th North Carolina Senior Four-Ball Championship will take place on August 12-14 at Greenville Country Club (Greenville Course) in Greenville, NC.

The Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship format is 54 holes of four-ball stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 30 scores and ties. A tie for the overall championship is decided by an on-course playoff. Entry is open to any male golfer who has reached his 55th birthday by August 12, 2014, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA handicap index at a member club.

The Greenville course was built in 1923 as a nine hole golf course. In later years the course transitioned into an 18 hole facility. In 1993, the Greenville course went under a major renovation and reopened in the October 1994. This was directed by golf architect, John Lafoy. Mr. Lafoy began his design career working with George Cobb on the remodeling of Augusta National. He also did renovation work on Country Club of Charleston and Country Club of Birmingham.

Playing 6,227 yards par 71 from the championship tees, the course with its tree lined fairways and champion Bermuda greens offer a challenge for all skill levels. The Greenville course has hosted numerous Carolinas Golf Association events, state championships and qualifiers. It is the current host of the ECU Lady Pirates intercollegiate Golf Tournament held in the fall. Greenville Country Club has hosted 4 previous CGA Championships: 1998 North Carolina Mid-Amateur, 2000 North Carolina Senior, 2003 Carolinas Junior and 2005 North Carolinas Senior Four-Ball.

The field for the 2014 championship is expected to consist of 41 teams. Exempt teams were automatically accepted into the championship while others were selected after close of entries with the lowest team handicap indexes gaining entry.

Returning to defend their 2013 North Carolina Senior Four-Ball victory is the team of Paul Simson, Raleigh, NC and Don Detweiler, Raleigh, NC. Simson is the all-time CGA championship leader with 27 titles including teaming up with Detweiler for two North Carolina Senior Four-Ball victories (2009, '13) and three Carolinas Senior Four-Ball wins (2008, '10, '12).

Other notable teams to make the 2014 field include a virtual who's who of senior amateur golfers in North Carolina: 2014 Carolinas Senior Four-Ball and 2011 NC Senior Four-Ball  champions Ron Carpenter, Creedmoor, NC and Gary Brown, Charlotte, NC; 2012 NC Senior Four-Ball champions and runners-up in the 2013 championship Jim Pearson and Jim Grainger both of Charlotte, NC; 2007 and 2008 NC Senior Four-Ball champions Logan Jackson, Winston-Salem, NC and David Strawn, Charlotte, NC; 2002 NC Senior Four-Ball winner Larry Boswell (15 CGA titles), Jamestown, NC and his partner Ernie Newton (3 CGA titles), Wallburg, NC; 2014 Carolinas Senior Four-Ball runners-up and 2013 NC Senior Four-Ball second place finishers Steve Sharpe, Greensboro, NC and Preston Edmondson, Morrisville, NC; Randy Beeson, Colfax, NC and Arlis Pike (3 CGA titles), Kernersville, NC; Russ Perry (2 CGA titles), Winston-Salem, NC and Mark Stephens (1 CGA title), Troutman, NC; and Gary Robinson (4 CGA titles), Fayetteville, NC and Keith Waters (2 CGA titles), Raleigh, NC.
