CGA Announces 48th Twin States Girls' Championship

WEST END, NC (6/30/14) -- The 48th Twin States Girls' Championship will be held at the Columbia Country Club (Ridgewood & Tall Pines) in Blythewood, SC on July 1-2, 2014.

The championship is broken up into two Divisions: the Junior Division and the Sub-Junior Division. The junior division is conducted at 36 holes of stroke play while the sub-junior division will play two rounds of 9 holes each. The field will be limited to 72 juniors and 12 sub-juniors. All junior division players will be flighted after 18 holes. The Championship Flight will be made up of the top 16 players from round one.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has not reached her 19th birthday by July 2, 2014, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 40.4.

Columbia Country Club opened for golf at its current location in December of 1962. Ellis Maples, a protégé of famed designer Donald Ross, designed the golf course. It is rated among the top 25 in the state of South Carolina. In 1999, the Club underwent a million dollar plus renovation. This project, completed in 2001, brought all 27 holes up to current USGA tournament standards. The new greens are now planted in Tif-Eagle Bermuda grass. The more than 90 bunkers on the course were rebuilt for better drainage and all teeing areas were leveled and rebuilt as well. The result is a beautiful and challenging golf course, suitable not only for top tournaments, but for the recreational golfer as well. Columbia Country Club has previously hosted the Carolinas Amateur Championship (1950); the Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship (2000); and the Carolinas Senior Amateur Championship (2003, 2011).

In the 2013, then 13 year-old Gina Kim of Chapel Hill, NC defeated first leader Reona Hirai of Summerville, SC by shooting a four-under par 68--140 to win her first CGA Championship. 2012 Twin States Champion Sydney Legacy of Lexington, SC finished in third place three shots behind the champion. .

While neither Kim, Hirai nor Legacy  are entered into the field this year, other notables in this year's strong field include 2014 North Carolina Junior Girls' Champion Grace Yatawara, Salisbury, NC; 2012 North Carolinas Junior Girls' Champion Isabella Rusher, Salisbury, NC; runner-up in the 2014 NC Junior Girls' and the 2014 Vicki DiSantis Girls' Championships Siranon Shoomee of Sanford, NC; semi-finalist in the 2014 NC Junior Girls' Championship Holly McCann, Raleigh, NC and 2014 NC Junior Girls' quarter-finalist Catherine Ashworth of Fuquay-Varina, NC.
