CGA Announces 54th North Carolina Amateur Championship

WEST END, NC (6/2/14) -- The 54th North Carolina Amateur Championship will be held at the Carolina Golf Club in Charlotte, NC on June 5-8, 2014.

141 players have qualified for the 2014 NC Amateur Championship. The championship format is 72 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 60 scorers and ties. A tie for the overall championship is decided by an on-course playoff. Exempt players were accepted into the championship at the time of their entry. Non-exempt players gained entry into the championship through sectional qualifying held at Country Club of Whispering Pines in Whispering Pines, NC; Chapel Hill Country Club in Chapel Hill, NC; Cowans Ford Country Club in Stanley, NC; Tanglewood Park (Championship) in Clemmons, NC; Cedar Rock Country Club in Lenoir, NC; and Olde Point Golf and Country Club in Hampstead, NC.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by June 5, 2014, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 5.4.

The Carolina Golf Club is recognized for its classic Donald Ross golf course and proximity to the central business district of Charlotte, and its exceptional conditioning and casual, friendly atmosphere. Designed by Ross in 1929, the Carolina Golf Club course was restored by Kris Spence in 2008. The championship will play at 6,964 yards and par 36-35--71. The Carolina Golf Club has previously hosted the 2005 North Carolina Junior Championship; the 2010 Carolinas Super Senior Championship; and the 2011 Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship.

In the 2013 NC Amateur championship, Steven Brame of Henderson, NC carded a final round 69 to finish at 11-under 273 to finish one shot ahead of Trevor Cone of Concord, NC and Bailey Patrick, Jr. of Charlotte, NC. Brame also had to overcome having his truck crushed by a fallen tree during Thursday’s thunderstorm at Forsyth Country Club. Brame will be back this year to defend his championship as will 2013 runners-up Cone and Patrick, Jr.

Other notables in this year's strong field include 2012 NC Amateur Champion and 5-time CGA Champion Matthew Crenshaw of Burlington, NC; four-time NC Amateur Champion Paul Simson (27-time CGA Champion) of Raleigh, NC; three-time CGA Men's Player of the Year (5-time CGA Champion) Scott Harvey of Greensboro, NC; current Carolinas Amateur Champion Carter Jenkins of Raleigh, NC; three-time CGA Champion Paul Tucker of Waxhaw, NC; 2011 NC Mid-Amateur Champion Brian Westveer of Charlotte, NC; and two-time CGA Champion Russ Perry of Winston-Salem, NC.
