Four Teams Vie for Spot in Interclub Finals

Monday, November 04, 2013

Four teams have made it to the semi-finals of the 2013 CGA Interclub Championship. In the East Regionals, Bentwinds CC (Fuquay-Varina, NC) took on the Anderson Creek GA (Spring Lake, NC) on Saturday October 26 and won convincingly 29-7. Taking 12 of 18 points at home, Bentwinds Paul Gurney and Matt Witosky won all three matches and 6 points to lead their team. Teammate Joel Marmion posted a 2 under 70 and 2 match points over Jon Hockaday to lead all scorers. Usually, winning 6 of 18 points on the road would be enough to secure a win. But at Anderson Creek the Bentwinds players found their game and obviously the course to their liking. 5 of the 6 BCC players posted scores 79 or better with Julian Burton the low man at 72. Three others posted a 73 (Steve Hamby, Currie T. Howell and Dallas Goldston). This led to a 17 to 1 win on the road. Francis Ralph Dubois Jr. was the lone 1 point for Anderson Creek as he matched Burton's 72 and tied him in their single match. Teammate Dale Fogarty also posted a 72 (at Bentwinds). Next up for Bentwinds will be Lincoln Country Club.

Lincoln Country Club (Lincolnton, NC) had a relatively easy time with the Tanglewood GA (Clemmons, NC) in the North Regional finals, also on October 26, winning 26-10. Like Bentwinds, Lincoln CC won at both sites starting with an 11-7 win at Tanglewood. Kevin Thornburg and Dan Mayo led the way with 5 match points while teammates Trent Little and Wayne King contributed singles victories. At Lincoln CC, LCC took 10 of 12 singles match points and 5 of 6 four-ball points. Paul Mauney led all scorers with a 73 while two teams for LCC (Danny Hardin with Mel Parker and Ron Hegmann with Richard Cleveland) won all 6 points. Eddie McBride, John Nieters and Jim Williams led Tanglewood with 2 point wins each from their single matches. Lincoln CC will meet Bentwinds on November 9 with the winner advancing to the finals in Greensboro.

In the South Regional finals held November 2nd, Olde Sycamore (Charlotte, NC) squeaked out a 2 point win (19-17) over The Creek GA (Charlotte, NC). Both teams took care of business at their home courses with 14-4 and 13-5 wins respectively. In the end, Olde Sycamore won 4 of the 6 four-ball matches and 51/2 of the singles matches. The Creek's Jamie Mooney and Mike Refsnider led all scorers with 71's at Highland Creek, while Richard Harris and John Mefford posted 76's to lead Olde Sycamore. The 2012 Interclub champs from Fort Mill Golf Club will face Olde Sycamore in the semi-finals.

Fort Mill GC (Fort Mill, SC) advanced as the West Regional winner following a narrow 20-16 victory over The Club at Longview (Waxhaw, NC) on November 2nd. Ray Racer and David Wyatt teamed up for Fort Mill to win 5 of 6 points at home while teammates Ron Hampton and Clif Armstrong won all 6 points at Longview resulting in a 9 to 9 tie for both teams. Kevin Walsh and captain Jack Skolds led the Club @ Longview with a 5 to 1 win. Fort Mill will now take on a familiar Group D foe (Olde Sycamore) with hopes of playing in Greensboro on the 16th/17th of November and another shot at the Championship.
