Paul Simson Aims for his 7th NC Senior Title at Myers Park CC
PAUL SIMSON AIMS TO ADD TO HIS RECORD NUMBER OF VICTORIES IN 28th NORTH CAROLINA SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP, MAY 14-16
WEST END, NC – Paul Simson of Raleigh, already the winningest champion in the long history of the Carolinas Golf Association, will be shooting for his fifth straight victory in the North Carolina Senior Championship when the 28th annual edition is played May 14-16 at Myers Park Country Club in Charlotte.
Simson, 62, won last year at Oak Valley GC in Advance, NC, giving him his 25th CGA championship victory. That total surpassed the long-time record of 24 held by Dale Morey of High Point, NC.
Simson has won this championship six times – in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Cliff Cunningham of Monroe, NC previously held sole possession of most victories with six victories in the 1990s and early 2000s.
The championship is contested at 54 holes of stroke play. All competitors will compete in one division and will compete for 36 holes before the field is cut to the low 60 scorers and ties. A tie for the overall championship is decided by an on-course playoff.
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 55th birthday by May 14, 2013, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA handicap index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 10.4.
The Myers Park Country Club golf course, renovated in 2008 by Kris Spence, represents a blend of classic and modern design. The 1945 Donald Ross layout was updated with new greens complexes, re-shaped bunkers, and realigned and graded tee boxes. Nestled among a park-like landscape, dotted with oak and maple trees, rolling hills and the Briar Creek, the course features recovered contours and forms.
The par-71 layout will play at 6,517 yards for the N.C. Senior, which will be the 11th CGA major championship hosted by Myers Park Country Club.
A field of 127 players qualified for the 213 championship. Non-exempt players gained entry to the field by competing in one of four qualifying tournaments. The qualifying sites for this year’s championship were held at Cowans Ford CC in Stanley, NC on April 22, at Mimosa Hills G&CC in Morganton, NC on April 23, at Heritage GC in Wake Forest, NC on April 30 and at Salem Glen CC in Clemmons, NC on May 2.
In addition to Simson, last year’s runnerup Jim Grainger of Charlotte, is expected to play again in 2013. A year ago, Simson birdied the second hole of a sudden-death playoff to take the victory.
David Rucker is Myers Park’s golf professional, while Scott Kennon is the course superintendent.
