Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls Championship Set for May 4-5 at Pine Island
8TH VICKI DISANTIS JUNIOR GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP AT PINE ISLAND COUNTRY CLUB IN CHARLOTTE, NC
WEST END, NC – The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 8 th Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls Championship at Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte, NC, May 4-5.
The championship is named in honor of Mrs. Vicki DiSantis for her dedication and years of hard work in support of girls’ junior golf in the Carolinas.
Last year’s champion was Katelyn Dambaugh of Goose Creek, SC, who posted an even-par total of 144 to win by one stroke over 2011 champion Chelsey Couch of Ware Shoals, SC.
Dambaugh, who plays out of Dataw Island Club, SC, is entered again this year, as are Reona Hirai of Summerville, SC and Kelli Murphy of Elgin, SC, who tied for third in 2012.
The championship is contested at 36 holes of stroke play in one division. Trophies will be awarded to the top six players. A tie for the overall championship is decided by an on-course playoff. All other ties will be broken by the USGA recommended matching of cards playoff system.
All competitors will play from approximately 6,000 yards.
The champion will be invited to represent the CGA in the Mid-Atlantic Challenge Junior Girls Team Match, which will be played at the Country Club of Pinehurst on July 27-28.
Entry is open to any female (at birth) amateur golfer ages 13-18 as of May 5, who has not started college, is a legal resident of one of the Carolinas, and the junior golfer is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA). The competitor must have a USGA handicap index of 18.4 or less.
Inspired by a rolling piece of farmland in the mid 1960s, golf course architect Charles M. Mahannah created the Pine Island course that is dissected by a rambling stream known as "Long Creek" and populated with hardwoods and pines. In January 2005, the club began a major renovation by architect Michael Gleason on the rolling, tree-lined course that included the reworking of all 18 greens and bunkers, installing four sets of tees on each hole, rerouting holes six through nine and dramatically improving drainage control and landscaping. The course has 419 Bermuda fairways and tees, along with a blend of A-1 and A-4 creeping bent grass on its greens.
This will be the sixth straight year the Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls has been played at Pine Island.
Larry Yount is the club’s general manager, Mark Hofstetter is the head PGA professional and Brandon Mills is the course superintendent.
