47th Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Release
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- The 47th Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship will be contested at The Cliffs at Keowee Springs in Six Mile, S.C. from April 27-29, 2015.
2014 champions (L-R): Ron Carpenter and Gary Brown. |
The defending champions, Ron Carpenter of Creedmoor, N.C. and Gary Brown of Charlotte, N.C. look to claim their third CGA four-ball championship; the duo also won the 2011 N.C. Senior Four-Ball.
While Brown's two CGA titles have come teamed with Carpenter, Carpenter has won two other CGA championships. He won the N.C. Super Senior last year and in 2006 he won this championship teamed with Ernie Newton of High Point, N.C. Newton is competing in this year's championship with Garry Brown of Oak Island, N.C., not to be confused with Gary Brown, Carpenter's partner.
A full field of 88 teams is expected at this year's championship. Exempt teams were automatically accepted into the championship while others were selected after close of entries with the lowest team handicap indexes gaining entry. Past champions competing at The Cliffs at Keowee Springs include: three-time winners Paul Simson and Don Detweiler of Raleigh, N.C. (2008, 2010, and 2012); Arlis Pike of Kernersville, N.C. (2013), Frank Ford III of Charleston, S.C. (2011), two-time winner Bill Smunk of Kingstree, S.C. (2007 & 2011), and Joe Padgette of North Charleston, S.C. (2007), each of whom are playing with different partners than the year they won.
A team to watch boasts the winners of the past three Carolinas Senior Amateur Championships. Rick Cloninger of Fort Mill, S.C. (2012 & 2013) and Jim Grainger of Charlotte, N.C. (2014) will partner to try to add a Carolinas Senior Four-Ball title. Each has multiple CGA victories, Grainger is also a past Carolinas Four-Ball and North Carolina Senior Four-Ball champ.
This is the first CGA championship hosted by The Cliffs at Keowee Springs. The Keowee Springs golf course is one of Tom Fazio's most scenic and uniquely designed courses, and was described by WorldGolf.com as "one of the most versatile designs in Fazio's award-winning repertoire." Completed in 2008, the course combines Bermuda grass fairways and rough with Tif-Eagle tee areas and 007 Bentgrass greens across a gentle, rolling mountainside layout, with long-range views of Lake Keowee.
The Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship format is 54 holes of four-ball stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 30 scores and ties. A tie for the overall championship is decided by an on-course playoff. Entry is open to any male golfer who has reached his 55th birthday by April 27, 2015, is a legal resident of North or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA handicap index at a member club.
