Announcing the 2023 David Parrott Memorial Scholarship Recipients

 

 

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (August 12, 2023) - The Carolinas Golf Association (CGA), along with the Carolinas Golf Foundation (CGF), is proud to announce the recipients of the 2023 David Parrott Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to deserving high school seniors from around the Carolinas for their outstanding display of academic achievement, sportsmanship, and community service.

 

“Since the CGF began in 1977, we have broadened our reach to fund a variety of Carolinas-based golf initiatives,” remarked CGF chair Frank Golden. “The foundation has grown over the years and has added a larger and broader scholarship program. It is always a pleasure to hand out these scholarships to such deserving young candidates”.

 

In 1986, the CGA created the David Parrott Award to recognize a Carolinas Junior Boys' Team member who displayed excellence in academics and sportsmanship. The CGA expanded the award in 2018 to recognize a female Carolinas Junior Girls' Team member and to award a $1,000 scholarship to both players.

 

The CGF continues to honor David's memory by expanding the award to help support these students' respective college educations by offering $30,000 annually to our CGA and Youth on Course Carolinas members. An Awards Advisory Committee selected by the CGA and CGF considers the respective ability, educational goals, financial needs, and career ambitions of each applicant.

About David Parrott

 

David Parrot was diagnosed with leukemia in the spring of 1982. During his brief illness, he participated in the golf camp at Duke University and competed in the SCGA South Carolina Junior Championship, finishing third in his flight. He was given the Derek Davis sportsmanship award at the championship for his effort and determination, along with the inspiration he gave to all who knew him. David passed on July 29, 1982, at the age of 16. In 1986, the CGA created the David Parrott Award, which, to date, has been awarded over 68 times.

 

About the Carolinas Golf Foundation

 

The Carolinas Golf Foundation (CGF) was formed by the Carolinas Golf Association in 1977 to provide support for a variety of Carolinas-based golf initiatives. The Carolinas Golf Association and the Carolinas Golf Foundation are both 501(c)3 non-profit educational organizations. The Carolinas Golf Foundation has provided over $2,000,000 over the last 43 years for various projects and scholarships.

 

Through Youth on Course, the Carolinas Golf Foundation allows kids across North and South Carolina to play golf for just $5 per round. And that’s one of the many ways we pass the game on to the next generation. The CGF supports women’s golf, disabled golfers, college scholarships, turfgrass research, and the historic Xan Law Jr. Hall of History that captures and displays the rich golf tradition of the Carolinas.  

 

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

 

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1909 to promote and protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support, and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.

 

The CGA annually conducts 48 championships and five team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. It also runs over 150 One-Day (net and gross) events and qualifying for USGA national championships.
