Kim Wins Carolinas Women's Am, VT takes Collegiate Cup

 

 

RALEIGH, N.C. (June 29, 2023) -- Final results of the 97th Carolinas Women's Amateur Championship at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh, N.C. on June 29, 2023. The field competed at 6,209 yards (par 36-36--72).

It was a hot and exciting week at the 97th Carolinas Women's Amateur Championship at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh, N.C. This year's Carolinas Women's Amateur Championship looked a little different than it has in years past, with there only being the championship division and no Carolinas Division. The championship came down to the wire and saw 14-year-old Raleigh local Jenna Kim taking home the trophy with a total score of 6-under-par (210). 

 

This week's tournament was jammed packed with action from a deeply skilled field. Going into the final round Emily Mathews of Mebane, N.C., held the lead by one stroke over Jenna Kim. However, throughout the tournament, Kim was hot on her trail and would take the lead on the fifth hole today, ultimately coming out on top. Mathews carded rounds of 68-72-73 for a total of 213 and finish in second. 

 

"I did not look at the leaderboard at all and did not know what was happening. It felt like a practice round since I was in a cart and was playing like I normally do. I was not really worried until the last three holes after I checked the scores," stated Kim. 

 

Kim played steady all week, carding three rounds under par of 70-71-69, for a total of 210 for 6-under-par. Her final round scorecard saw four birdies and 13 pars to gain and maintain the lead. 

 

"I played steadily this week, and if I made a mistake or missed a green, I made sure I got up and down for the next time. My putting also helped me out this week," stated Kim. 

 

Isabella Rawl of Lexington, S.C., came in third place finishing at 214 with rounds of 74-71-69. In fourth place, Anna Morgan, the 2020 Carolinas Women’s Amateur champion from Spartanburg, S.C., ended 1-over-par, 217. Rounding out the leaderboard in fifth place was Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C., recording at 2-over-par, 218.

Collegiate Cup Results

 

During the championship, there is a secondary competition called the Collegiate Cup, where eligible players represent their college/university in a team competition. The top two 54-hole scores from represented schools are combined to create a team score. The lowest team score wins the Collegiate Cup. This year Virginia Tech claimed the prestigious Cup.
