In a picture perfect weekend of golf in the foothills of North Carolina, Anna Howerton of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Davis Wotnosky of Wake Forest, N.C. were crowned champions of the Mimosa Hills Junior Invitational. Howerton finished at 7-under-par, 137 and Wotnosky closed at 7-under-par, 133.

Howerton shot 3-under-par, 69 in the opening round which put her in a tie for the lead with Kiera Bartholomew of Wake Forest, N.C. going into Sunday’s final round.

“Going into today tied for the lead I knew I needed to work hard for whatever shots I could get,” Howerton said. “I just tried to stay level headed from start to finish.”

The High Point University commit came into the final round determined to become a Carolinas Golf Association Champion and that's exactly what she did. She made eight birdies on the day, including three in-a-row on Nos. 10, 11 and 12 to gain control of the championship.

Howerton’s back nine was a rollercoaster with a mix of birdies and bogeys, but she closed out her final round at 4-under-par, 68 for the day to win by three strokes.

“I’ve played in just about every CGA event since I’ve been in high school,” Howerton said. “So to finally win one means I can knock it off my bucket list.”

Kasey Mcllvaine of Raleigh, N.C. earned runner-up at 4-under-par, 140. She posted back-to-back rounds of 2-under-par, 70 at Mimosa Hills. In a tie for third at even-par, 144 was Bartholomew and Saia Rampersaud of Durham, N.C.

The boys’ draw was back-and-forth all day during the final round. Wotnosky, who was one stroke back at the beginning of the day after shooting 4-under, 66 on day one, found a way to get the job done.

The class of 2027 graduate had just one bogey on his scorecard and was steady with his game for the duration of the final round. When it mattered most, Wotnosky hammered home three birdies on the back nine.

“I kind of struggled finishing out my front nine,” Wotnosky said. “Going into the back nine I knew I needed to shoot three or four-under to give myself a chance at winning so that's what I tried to do.”

His most momentous hole of the day was No. 16 which is a tricky uphill par-4. He made birdie there to take the lead for the first time all weekend. Back-to-back pars on the final two holes gave him his second career Carolinas Golf Association win.

“I felt like all summer I was knocking on the door on winning a CGA event,” Wotnosky said. “I came into this weekend pretty motivated to get it finished off, and it feels really good to do it. “

Fisher Kennedy of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Cole Rouse of Kernersville, N.C. tied for second at 6-under-par, 134. Kennedy shot 5-under-par, 65 in the final round which was the low 18-hole score of the weekend on the boy’s side.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to extend its deepest thanks and gratitude to Mimosa Hills Golf Club and its staff for hosting the 3rd Mimosa Hills Junior Invitational, especially, Head Golf Professional Jimmy Piercy and Head Golf Course Superintendent Dan Winters.
