Hope Valley Country Club provides a test that invites the best junior girls’ and boys’ to compete. Its quick greens and heavy rough were challenging to say the least, but Macy Pate of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Tyler Jones of Jacksonville, N.C. each prevailed to be named the 5th Hope Valley Junior Invitational Champions.
In the Girls’ Division, Pate cruised to victory, finishing at 1-under, 209 to win the tournament by five strokes. The win marks her fifth Carolinas Golf Association win, all coming before she begins her junior year of high school in a couple of weeks.
“My driver was really good all three days considering I never hit it out of bounds,” Pate said. “I also putted well, especially lag putting.”
After opening with even-par, 70 and one shot off the lead, it was Pate’s second round where she took control of the tournament. A 3-under, 67 catapulted her to the top of the leaderboard, giving her a four-shot cushion going into the final round.
“I just played really solid during round two,” Pate said. “I missed just one fairway, missed three greens and got up-and-down two of the times. Then I made some birdies, so it was a good round.”
During the final round, she set the tone early on by making birdie on the first hole. The 2021 Carolinas Junior Girls’ Player of the Year was in control of the tournament. She birdied No. 15 and after all was said and done, finished at 2-over, 72 for her final round. This was plenty to earn the win and receive a water shower from all her friends on the 18th green.
“At the end [Ella Perna] and I got water dumped on us, so it was cool to share that with her and be with her during her final junior golf round.”
Ella Perna of Durham, N.C. earned runner-up at 4-over, 214. It was the second consecutive year she earned runner-up in her hometown event. Pate and Perna stayed together this week, so for both families it was a great showing at Hope Valley.
Moving to the boys’ division, Jones saved his best golf of the week for when it mattered the most, which was hard to do considering he shot under par in the first two rounds. The UNC-Charlotte commit was clutch, shooting 4-under, 66 to finish at 9-under, 201 for the championship to win his first CGA title.
Jones, who was in good form this summer with back-to-back top-10 finishes, picked up his first CGA win at Hope Valley.
“It’s been a long time coming, I’ve played a lot of good golf recently, just haven’t put three rounds together,” Jones said. “To do it at Hope Valley is really cool. It’s one of the best tournaments I play every year.”
His final round of 66 tied the lowest round of the week by any player in the field. It was his back nine on Thursday that earned him the championship, shooting 3-under, after being tied for the lead when he made the turn.
It all got started on No. 11, where he made a difficult birdie putt from the back of the green. The next hole, Jones threw a dart with his approach shot and capitalized on his birdie putt. He then was left with a three-shot lead.
On No. 15, which is a par-5, Jones reached the green in two shots. Here is where he had his championship moment, drilling a 30-foot downhill putt for eagle and extending his lead.
“That putt was super tricky being straight downhill and down grain,” Jones said. “When I saw I hit my line I took a step back and pointed at the hole when it went in. When I made that I knew it was mine.”
Jones made just three bogeys on the week. His consistent play gave him a well-earned championship and an ice bath post round from his fellow competitors.
“I already had the chills, but when I felt that ice down my shirt I really had them,” Jones said. “
Jack Weiler of Waxhaw, N.C. earned runner-up at 4-under par, 206. Weiler was in the final group alongside round two leader Collin Salema, who finished fourth at 2-under, 208. Placing third was Trey Marrion of Chesapeake, V.A. at 3-under, 207.
The Carolinas Golf Association would like to extend its thanks to the staff and membership of Hope Valley Country Club for hosting the 5th Hope Valley Junior Invitational, especially Head Golf Professional Bob Byrnes, Course Superintendent Chad Buchman, Tournament Chair Allen Smith and General Manager Emzi Wewers

Hope Valley Country Club was founded in 1926 and the course was designed by the world-famous golf course architect, Donald J. Ross, in coordination with landscape architect Robert Cridland. Unlike many of his projects, Ross personally supervised the planning and construction of Hope Valley. Centered around its Aymar Embury II Clubhouse, the course has hosted many significant golf events. They include the U.S. Amateur Qualifying for both Men and Women, the U.S. Senior Men’s Qualifying, the North Carolina Amateur Championship, Carolinas Junior Boys’ Championship, Women’s Western Junior National Championship and Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship.
The tournament moment, of which the club members may be proudest of, took place on April 1, 1945 when Byron Nelson won the Durham Open at Hope Valley. This was his fourth victory out of winning eleven tournaments in a row, a PGA Tour record. Hope Valley membership recognizes that proud stewardship of these outstanding traditions requires that their club continue to revere the old and embrace the new in order to share their commitment to the great game of golf with upcoming generations.
