Parks & Owens, Bunn & Davis Win Respective Divisions

 

ASHEBORO, N.C. (April 1, 2022) -- Final results of the 5th North Carolina Super Senior Four-Ball Championship at Pinewood Country Club in Asheboro, N.C. on April 1, 2022. The 65+ Division competed at 6,122 yards and the 70+ Division competed at 5,672 yards (par 36-36--72).

36 holes was just not enough to decide the 65 and over Division of the North Carolina Super Senior Four-Ball, as tandem Charlie Parks of Asheboro, N.C. and Doug Owens of Albemarle, N.C. were locked in a tie with duo Kim Mansfield of Jackson Springs, N.C. and Ken Eichele of Pienhurst, N.C. 

 

Both teams finished the championship at a tally of 6-under-par, needing extra time to decide a champion. It was Owens who answered the bell, as he birdied the first playoff hole to give himself and Parks the win at Pinewood Country Club. 

 

An opening round 2-under-par, 70 put the pair in solid positioning on the leaderboard, and the 4-under-par second round 68 on Friday that included four birdies and an eagle proved to be exactly what Parks and Owens needed. 

 

Johnny Elam of Charlotte, N.C. and Steve Sharpe of Greensboro, N.C. finished in solo third with a two day total of 5-under-par, while Lennie Barton and Cliff Seastrunk of Raleigh, N.C. and Frank Golden of Charlotte, N.C. and Steve Wilkinson of Wilmington, N.C. finished in a tie for fourth, with both pairings coming in at 4-under-par for the Championship. 

 

In the 70 and over Division John Bunn of Apex, N.C. and Raymond Davis of Raleigh, N.C. turned in a very impressive two day total of 8-under-par to come away with the victory. 

 

A fiery opening round 6-under-par, 66 put them in the driver's seat early, as they recorded six birdies and not a single blemish on the scorecard. Another five birdies during their final round proved to be the decider in giving them the title. 

 

The team of Gary Strickfaden of Southern Pines, N.C. and Spike Smith of Pinehurst, N.C. finished alone in second place, with a two-day total of 6-under-par. An opening round 1-under-par, 71 put them a little behind the pace early, but a 5-under-par, 67 that included seven birdies proved to be an impressive finish to the championship.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

 

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.

The CGF has distributed nearly $2,000,000 since 1977 to benefit Carolinas' golf initiatives including junior and women's programs.
