Knox and McMillen Lead the N.C. Four-Ball Entering the Final Round

 

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. (October 2, 2021) -- Second round results of the  26th North Carolina Four-Ball Championship at The Club at 12 Oaks in Holly Springs, N.C. on October 2, 2021. The field is competing at 6,999 yards (par 36-36--72).

First time four-ball partners, Andy Knox of Apex, N.C. and Mark McMillen of Holly Springs, N.C. fired off an 11-under-par, 61 in the second round of the North Carolina Four-Ball today to catapult themselves atop the leaderboard.

 

Knox and McMillen are both members at The Club at 12 Oaks and they chalked up a few of their 12 birdies to prior course knowledge. The others were attributed to their ability to “ham and egg it.” The most memorable play of the day for this side was McMillen’s drive off on No. 12, the 323 yard par-4. “Mark drove the green to about 18 feet and pulled off a clutch birdie,” said Knox. 

 

Knox played college golf at UNC and McMillen played at NC State. While once rivals, this unlikely duo finished the second round on top at 16-under-par, 128 overall, despite being five strokes off the lead after the opening round. 

 

Holly Springs natives Owen Kose and Zach Roberts finished their second round with an overall score of 15-under-par, 129. That puts them in second position just one stroke off the lead entering the final round.

 

Knox and McMillen remarked on how similar their putting and mental game is, which allowed them to mesh well. However, Kose and Roberts have very different games that pair well together for this four-ball format.

 

“I’m a very consistent golfer. I keep the ball in play, make a lot of pars, and that frees up Owen (Kose) to be a little more aggressive than he normally is in a stroke play round,” said Roberts. “We both trust each other and ourselves, which is really important out here.”

 

The duo exemplified this strategy in an impressive stretch as Kose eagled No. 5 followed by three straight birdies on Nos. 6, 7 and 8 to close out their round at 7-under-par, 65.

 

The 2016 and 2017 North Carolina Four-Ball Champions, JD McNeill of Raleigh, N.C. and Jerry Richardson of Cary, N.C. hold third position at 13-under-par, 131. They carded a solid 3-under-par, 69 in the second round to trail the lead by just three strokes. 

 

Ryan Nagy and Trey Broome of Raleigh, N.C. hold fourth position at 12-under-par, 132 and Alex Nianouris of Raleigh, N.C. and David Sargent of Cornelius, N.C. are in fifth position at 11-under-par, 133.

 

The cutline fell at 3-under-par, 141 and 32 sides made it into the final round. The final round will begin tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. with starting times off of Nos. 1 and 10. About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
