The First Round of the Mimosa Hills Junior Invitational provided everything you could ask for and more. A great golf course, scenic mountain vistas, and plenty of low scores as the talented field of Juniors went to work on Saturday.

In the Girls’ Division it’s a deadlock at the top, with Ella Stalvey of Blythewood, S.C. and Grace Ridenour of Raleigh, N.C. both turning in rounds of 3-under-par, 69 to sit atop the leaderboard.

After an opening bogey on her first hole of the Invitational, Stalvey played a flawless next 17 holes. She recorded birdies on holes 3, 5, 7 and 14 to go bogey free after the first. Ridenour carded birdies on holes 1 and 5 to fire a 2-under-par, 34 on her opening nine. A bogey on the Par-4 11th would set her back slightly, before a strong finish by playing her next seven hotels in 2-under-par, birdieing holes 12 and 15.

Just off the pace and tied for third are Annalee Caveney of Raleigh, N.C. and Macy Pate of Winston-Salem, N.C.

Caveney played a wonderful round of golf Saturday, carding birdies on holes 8, 9 and 14 with her lone bogey of the day on the finishing Par-4 18th at Mimosa Hills.

Pate showed why she is a three time CGA champion this summer once again, as she leads the Girls Divisions in birdies after the First Round, after making seven. She would fire equal 1-under-par, 35’s on each nine to finish solidly in contention going into Sunday.

Rounding out the top five is Ella Perna of Durham, N.C. who is two back of the lead after an opening round 1-under-par, 71. Perna made her turn towards the homeward nine at 2-over-par after a front nine 38, but would go mistake free on her back nine with bridies coming on holes 12, 14, and 18 to right the ship going into the Final Round.

As for the Boys’, Quinlan Polin of Cary, N.C. absolutely dazzled in his opening round at Mimosa Hills. Polin recorded nine birdies in his round en route to a fiery 6-under-par, 64 that vaulted him into first place.

Polin’s start propelled him forward right away, as he recorded birdies on holes 1, 3, 4, 6, and 7 to birdie five of his first seven holes. Through 15 holes Polin sat at 3-under-par for the Championship before he finished with a flurry of birdies on holes 16, 17, and 18 to spearhead the leaderboard.

Jack Wieler of Waxhaw, N.C. is right on Polin’s heels after an opening 5-under-par, 65. Wieler carded six birdies and an eagle on the Par-5 14th on his day, and finished strongly playing his last five holes in 4-under-par.

Sitting in third place is Jack Boyer of Greensboro, N.C. who had one of the more ridiculous back nines you’ll ever see. After playing his first 10 holes in 2-over-par, Boyer birdied holes 12 through 17 to play his back nine in 5-under-par which has him sitting at a first round score of a 4-under-par, 66.

Log Jammed in a tie for fourth are Gray Mitchum of Winterville, N.C., Keenan Royalty of Raleigh, N.C., and Dallas Johnson of Mount Pleasant, S.C. The trio all fired a 3-under-par, 67 and are still firmly in the mix for Championship contention.
