Barber, Gregory Take Home Thrilling Victories In The HVJI

 

DURHAM, N.C. (August 5, 2021) -- Final Round results from the 4th Hope Valley Junior Invitational at Hope Valley Country Club, in Durham, N.C. The girls’ field competed at 6,019 yards (35-35--70), while the boys’ competed at 6,720 (35-35--70).

Hope Valley Country Club provided the ultimate test this week in conditions that only got quicker round after round. 

 

In the Girls Division Kate Barber of Savannah, GA rose above the field and cemented herself as a worthy champion, shooting rounds of 72, 73, and 72 to finish 7-over-par on the Par-70 golf course. 

 

“The entire day I was just trying to hit the greens and make putts,” said Barber. “It didn’t really happen until around 15 when I had a really good two putt there. That kind of made the momentum shift.”

 

Barber’s steady golf had her in prime position coming down the stretch on Thursday to make a serious push for the title, and she took advantage of her opportunities. Going into the Par-4 17th hole, Barber had a one shot advantage over Ella Perna of Durham, N.C. who was in the group ahead. 

 

Needing a clutch shot for some separation on the leaderboard, Barber flipped a wedge in close, and rattled home her birdie putt to get to 6-over-par, and sit two clear of Perna who was in the clubhouse at 8-over-par. Barber would just miss her par putt for an impressive up-and-down from the rough and tap in for bogey to finish with a one stroke victory. 

 

“I knew I could birdie it,” said Barber. “I hit my chip to about six feet and made the birdie putt. That’s when I knew I could win this tournament.” 

 

Perna played impressive golf as well all week long, and made a serious Thursday charge to try to grapple for the 2021 title. She entered the day at 8-over-par and was four back of the leaders, but fired the round of the tournament, an even par 70 that was highlighted by a three birdie, 2-under-par performance on her back nine. 

 

Melanie Walker of Burke, VA and Kiera Bartholomew of Wake Forest, N.C. finished in a tie for third at 10-over-par, while Madison Messimer of Myrtle Beach, S.C. finished in solo fifth at 11-over-par. 

 

In the Boys Division it was Andrew Gregory of Inman, S.C. who came away with a dramatic one stroke victory. 

 

“It feels great,” said Gregory. “I honestly can’t believe it.”

 

Gregory carded a 1-over-par 71 in his final round Thursday to finish the tournament at 1-under-par, the lone under par three day total of the event. 

 

“This place fit my wedge game this week,” said Gregory. “My short game was really good the past few days. That’s pretty much what saved me.” 

 

It was Gregory’s closing stretch that propelled him to his maiden victory, as he finished the tournament playing his final six holes in 2-under-par with birdies on holes 15 and 17. 

 

“I knew this golf course was just going to get harder,” said Gregory. “I knew scores were just going to get higher so I was just trying to make some pars.”

 

Ian Glanton of Metter, GA and Clark Xander Goboy of Chesapeake, VA finished in a tie for second at even par for their three day total. Rounding out the top five in the Boys division are Trey Marrion of Chesapeake, VA, Will Hartman of Marvin, N.C., and Owen Kose of Holly Springs, N.C., who all finished in a tie for fourth at 1-over-par for the Championship.

Hope Valley Country Club was founded in 1926 and the course was designed by the world-famous golf course architect, Donald J. Ross, in coordination with landscape architect Robert Cridland. Unlike many of his projects, Ross personally supervised the planning and construction of Hope Valley. Centered around its Aymar Embury II Clubhouse, the course has hosted many significant golf events. They include the U.S. Amateur Qualifying for both Men and Women, the U.S. Senior Men’s Qualifying, the North Carolina Amateur Championship, Carolinas Junior Boys’ Championship, Women’s Western Junior National Championship and Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship.

 

The tournament moment, of which the club members may be proudest of, took place on April 1, 1945 when Byron Nelson won the Durham Open at Hope Valley. This was his fourth victory out of winning eleven tournaments in a row, a PGA Tour record. Hope Valley membership recognizes that proud stewardship of these outstanding traditions requires that their club continue to revere the old and embrace the new in order to share their commitment to the great game of golf with upcoming generations.
