Sasha Hayes  of Winston-Salem, N.C. earned medalist honors on Tuesday at Gaston Country Club in Gastonia, N.C. for her 3-under-par performance at the 23rd playing of the Carolinas Women’s Match Play Championship. She entered the round of 32 for match-play as the No. 1 seed.

In the stroke play qualifying round held on Tuesday morning, Hayes posted a bogey-free, 3-under-par, 69. She played her outward nine with consistency, rolling in nine consecutive pars for an even-par 36. On her inward nine, she fired off a 3-under-par, 33 after finding six pars and three birdies. One shot behind Hayes, five golfers tied for second at 2-under-par, 70; Jessica Spicer of Bahama, N.C., Emily Mahar of Bermuda Run, N.C., Katie Kirk of Raleigh, N.C., Tara Bettle of Greensboro, N.C. and Callista Rice of Mars Hill, N.C.

Hayes defeated the No. 32 seeded Rachel Wyatt of Charleston, S.C. 5 & 4. She went on a tear after losing the opening hole to her opponent. Hayes responded by winning the next three consecutive holes to give her a 2-up advantage. Hayes would gather three more uncontested wins on the front nine to bring the match to 5-up with nine holes to play. Hayes was simply unstoppable as she fired off a two-under-par, 34 on the front nine.

Past champion, Dawn Woodard of Greer, S.C. managed to capture the tenth seed in match play after signing off on a 2-over-par, 74 scorecard in the morning round. However, a lingering wrist injury led her to unfortunately concede her match against No. 23 Pilar Berchot of Raleigh, on the ninth hole.

The biggest upset came from the No. 29 seeded Emily Dunlap of Greenville, S.C. defeating the No. 4 seeded Callista Rice of Mars Hill, N.C.

The Round of 16 matches will begin on Wednesday morning with No. 1 seed Hayes taking on No. 17 seed CC Buford of Winterville, N.C., the East Carolina University women’s golf coach. Winners of the morning matches will advance to the quarterfinal matches in the afternoon.
