Pate Snags Third Championship Of The Summer

 

GAFFNEY, S.C. (July 22, 2021) -- Final round results from the 65th Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship at Cherokee National Golf Club in Gaffney, S.C. on July 22, 2021. The field competed at 6,104 yards (par 36-36--72).

In one of the premier Junior Girls’ Golf Events of the summer in the Carolinas, Macy Pate of Winston-Salem, N.C., rose above what was an incredibly strong field to capture her third Carolinas Golf Association Championship of the year. 

 

“I’m feeling really good,” said Pate. “I was feeling really confident going in just because I had been playing super well. My ball striking was really good all week and I gave myself a lot of birdie looks. The putter got really hot today and I was making a lot of putts from a  long way away. It was a lot of fun.” 

 

After back to back victories in the North Carolina Junior Girls’ Championship and the Twin States Junior Girls Championship to cap off the month of June, Pate now collects the title of the winner of the 65th Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship. 

 

Her steady play and ability to find an extra gear once again helped Pate not only pace the field, but gain ground and cruise comfortably to her victory. She would come into the final round with a three shot lead over Runner-Up Sydney Roberts of Chesnee, S.C., and would fire a final round 6-under-par 66 to finish the championship with a seven shot win.

 

“The course kind of seems like it’s wide but it’s not,” said Pate. “There’s a lot of shots that are pretty narrow that you have to hit precise. I hit most of the fairways so I was giving myself pretty easy shots into the greens. There are longer holes but I hit all my irons well and all my wedges better than I had been. Anytime I could give myself a short wedge shot I felt pretty good.” 

 

Pate got out of the gates quickly, with birdies on holes one, three, five and six to make the turn in 2-under-par. Another birdie added on the par-4 10th saw Pate’s advantage at three shots with eight to play. Now firmly in the driver’s seat, Pate continued to roll in bridies beautifully, finishing her final four holes in 3-under-par with bridies on 15, 17, and 18.

 

“It means a lot,” said Pate. “I know all these girls so well. I’ve played so many rounds with so many of them and just to be able to get it done and have three good rounds under par it means a lot.” 

 

While it may not be the result Roberts wanted, the solo second finisher played tremendous golf this week at Cherokee National Golf Club, finishing with a three day total of 5-under-par. Roberts started her final round ready to go as well, chipping in for eagle on the par-5 fifth to start her day. She would make the turn in 3-under-par with help from birdies on holes four and nine as well. 

 

Rounding out the top five is Adrian Anderson of Murrells Inlet, S.C., who finished solo third at 1-under-par, Maria Atwood of Holly Springs, N.C., who settled in at solo fourth at 1-over-par, and Madison Messimer of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Emily Mathews of Mebane, N.C., Kiera Bartholomew of Wake Forest, N.C., and Anna Howertown of Winston-Salem, N.C., who all finished in a tie for fifth at 3-over-par.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.
