In what can only be described as an action packed final day at Jacksonville Country Club, Jonathan Honeywell of Whispering Pines, N.C., rose above the field to capture the title in the 13th playing of the Jimmy Anderson Boys’ Invitational.

“I played solid the first day and knew the course was gettable if I could hit it well and get a few putts to fall,” said Honeywell. “Day two I didn’t strike it too well but my short game bailed me out a few times and I was happy I finished three under both days.”

Battling high heat and humidity that is all too familiar this time of year in North Carolina, the field of players in this event decided to go low, with 12 players finishing the championship in the red figures.

For Honeywell, it’s his first win in this event, and a very meaningful one.

“It means a lot,” said Honeywell. “I’ve been playing pretty well for the last six months but haven’t been able to get it done. I knew I could get it done this week and I came out and got it done.”

Honeywell had it going this weekend, shooting a 3-under-par 69 on his first round. He followed up a very steady first round with an equally good performance while battling a crowded leaderboard on Sunday’s final round, ultimately firing another 3-under-par 69 on to rise above the rest of the field. A bogey on just his fourth hole of the day did not deter Honeywell, instead he went to work and played the final 14 holes in 4-under-par, with birdies on holes five, nine, 14 and 15.

“I’m just hoping I can continue the good play I have going on right now for the rest of the season,” said Honeywell.”

Rounding out the top five is a very talented cast as well who played terrific golf this weekend. Smith Summerlin of Raleigh, N.C., finished in solo second at 5-under-par, while Bradley Davis Jr of Pilot Mountain, N.C., and Calvin Hawkins of Lexington, N.C., finished in a tie for third at 4-under-par.

Four players finished their championship in a tie for fifth at 3-under-par, including Josh Buxbaum of Wake Forest, N.C., Nick Norman of Gastonia, N.C., Jack LaPiana of Charlotte, N.C., and William Webb of Raleigh, N.C.

Jimmy Anderson was the head golf professional at Jacksonville Country Club for over 25 years.  Each Saturday morning, he conducted a junior golf clinic to help spread the game of golf to the next generation.  During his tenure at Jacksonville CC, he taught many juniors including Mallory Miller, the 1987 N.C. Junior Champion and numerous future collegiate and golf professionals.  Not only did he teach the game of golf, but was always there with a helpful word of encouragement to any young golfer.
