The penultimate round of a four-day tournament is called moving day for good reason. The 107th Carolinas Amateur Championship leaderboard saw non-stop movement from the first starting time until the final scorecard was signed. Cyrus Stewart of Raleigh, N.C. came out of the day on top after firing off a 3-under-par, 67 in the third round to finish at 6-under-par, 204 total.

The first hole of Stewart’s round set the tone for the day as he birdied the par-4, No. 1 right out of the gate. He continued to play a bogey-free front nine and dropped two more putts for birdie on Nos. 4 and 9 to make the turn at 3-under-par, 32 and tied for the lead.

“This course is a little shorter and when I drive the ball well I can hit fairways and have wedges in. When I have a wedge in my hand, I just try to hit close,” said the 2020 Carolinas Mid-Amateur Champion. “I switched to the arm-lock putting and ever since then I have just felt comfortable. As long as I read it right, I just feel like I have a good chance at making the putt.”

Stewart continued his streak with birdies on Nos. 10 and 12, which were answered with bogeys on Nos. 13 and 15 to finish out his round at 3-under-par, 67. He is the only player in the field to card all three rounds under-par this week and he now leads the field by one stroke. Stewart said, “I made it easier on myself out there today by hitting fairways and it was just a little less stressful than the last two days.”

In the final round, the Wake Forest alum will be paired with a former teammate, Davis Womble of Winston-Salem, N.C. who is tied for second position. Stewart remarked on the final round, “I’m looking forward to tomorrow. I see that my old teammate Davis Womble is up there with me so that should be fun.”

Womble was tied for third heading into the third round and planned to give himself the best possibility to make pars throughout the day and drop a birdie or two when the opportunity was there. He also started his round with a birdie on No. 1, which gave him momentum to carry through the front nine bogey-free with a clutch birdie on No. 7.

After the turn, Womble hit a stretch of holes that required some scrambling. He hit over the green on No. 14 and made an impressive up-and-down. Then on No. 15, he was short of the green and had a clutch par save thanks to his strong putting this week. He said, “the course played completely different today. It was a lot harder to get at pins and the course is playing a lot faster. You really had to be careful not to shortside yourself. I did a nice job of trying to relax and hit a nice putt. Thankfully most of them went in coming down the back nine there.”

The fellow Wake Forest alum finished his round at 1-under-par, 69 for a three-day total of 5-under-par, 205. Scott Harvey of Greensboro, N.C. is tied with Womble for second position, but had a very different path to the top today.

Harvey started his day eight shots off of the lead. He knew that he needed to go low in order to get back in the hunt and the number in his head was 66. The 2011 Carolinas Amateur Champion got off to a steady start with pars on Nos. 1, 2 and 3. However a birdie on No. 4 got the fire started. He continued to birdie Nos. 5, 6, 7 and 9 to make the turn at an outstanding 5-under-par, 30. After the turn, he began to slow down, but managed to cruise in with his goal of a 4-under-par, 66.

“I was way behind and I knew that I needed to make a lot of birdies and I did,” said Harvey. “I played a good round overall. I felt like I needed to shoot at least 66 to get back in it because there are some great players in it and I did.”

After two rounds in a row of 66, he remarked on his mindset for the final round tomorrow. “What I’ve learned in golf, I’ve done this a lot, is that you just play and whatever happens happens,” he said. “There is not really a whole lot that you can control. I guess my mindset is that I’m going to go out there and have fun and if I come out on top then that’s all good with me.”

Addison Beam of Cherryville, N.C. is in solo fourth position at 3-under-par, 207. He is still well within striking distance of the lead and will look to go low in the final round. The opening round leader, Austin Bonfiglio of Holly Springs, N.C., the second round leader, Blake Taylor of Atkinson, N.C., Michael La Sasso of Raleigh, N.C. and Matthew Sharpstene of Charlotte, N.C. are tied for fifth position at 2-under-par, 208 overall.

The final round will begin tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. with starting times until 11:10 a.m. off of No. 1. Stay tuned to our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for live coverage of the final round of the 107th Carolinas Amateur Championship to see who will take home the title.
