On what was a perfect day at Kinston Country Club, Maria Atwood of Holly Springs, N.C., secured her first ever Dogwood State Junior Girls’ Championship, with a come from behind victory.

“I’ve always wanted to win the Dogwood,” said Atwood. “It’s really special to me. I couldn’t be happier and I’m happy to get my second CGA win. It’s been a very good week.”

Atwood rallied after coming into the day two shots back of Emily Mathews of Mebane, N.C., and at one point she trailed by five shots in the final round. After a hard start with bogeys on holes 10 and 13, Atwood found her footing with a birdie on par-4 16th to claw right back into championship contention. From her fourth hole of the day, the 13th, and on Atwood played steady, even-par golf to be able to secure the one shot victory over Emily Mathews, and finish the championship at 3-over-par.

“The biggest challenge with this golf course is that it’s tight,” said Atwood. “A lot of holes are narrow so good tee shots are very important. Overall this week the thing that really helped me get this win was my putting and chipping. My short game was a big strength for me this week.”

Atwood will be sure to use the momentum from her win this week as well moving forward for the rest of her season in CGA events.

“I’m still excited for the rest of my tournaments this summer,” said Atwood. “I’m super excited to get this win this week.”

For Emily Mathews, while she was unable to secure a back-to-back victory in this event, she has only been beaten by two players in this event in the last three years, this being her second runner-up finish over that timeframe.

Karsyn Roberts of Pikeville, N.C., finished in solo third, having a three day score of 7-over-par. Grace Holcomb of Wilminton, N.C., and Heather Appelson of Wake Forest, N.C., both finished in a tie for fourth at 8-over-par for the championship. Sophie Lauture of Charlotte, N.C., and  Nicole Nash of Charlotte, N.C., finished in a tie for sixth at 9-over par.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the members and staff at Kinston Country Club, especially, General Manager David Hart, PGA Head Golf Professional Jeremy Shadle, and Head Golf Course Superintendent Patrick Connor for graciously hosting the 17th Dogwood State Junior Girls’ Championship.
