Four Advance to Friday's Semi-Final Rounds

 

ROARING GAP, N.C. (June 24, 2021) --  Round of 32 and quarter final results of the 54th North Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship at Roaring Gap Club in Roaring Gap, N.C. from June 22 - 25, 2021. The entire field competed in the same division and played from 6,348 yards.

The No. 16 seeded Jonathan Honeywell of Whispering Pines ousted the No.1 seeded Jake Clayton of Burlington in an adrenaline packed 20 hole match on Thursday morning at the NC Junior Boys’ Championship hosted by Roaring Gap Club. 
 

“It was a very stressful morning but I was quite pleased with the result,” Honeywell said after his match. “Clayton played well and I'm just glad I advanced to quarterfinals.”
 

Honeywell started his inward nine trailing Clayton by five holes. Then on No. 11 the Whispering Pines native fueled his jets winning four consecutives holes to loosen Claytons’ hold over him to one up. As the number of holes remaining was shrinking, Honeywell knew that he had to pick up another win to force a playoff. He made it happen on the par-5 sixteenth hole. The playoff lasted two holes until Honeywell parred the par-3 second to earn his spot in the quarterfinal match. 
 

The No. 46 seeded Hampton Roberts of Cary made a spectacular run throughout the Rounds of 64, 32, 16 and the now the quarterfinals. Roberts was able to tally a win in the Round of 16 this morning due to a commanding 7 & 6 win over his opponent Gray Mitchum of Winterville.    
 

“I trusted all the decisions he was going to make, he only called me in for only one second opinion today,” Hampton’s caddie Spencer Turtz said. “On hole 10 Hampton had a 20 foot putt which he cashed, so that was pretty awesome.” 
 

Daniel Boone of Fuquay Varina, the No.9 seed defeated the No. 40 seeded Connor Warren of Spruce Pine 5 & 4.  The No. 18 Eli Schmidly of Charlotte upsetted the No. 2 seeded Jack Wieler of Waxhaw.

Jonathan Honeywell continued his dominant playing in the quarter final stage defeating Daniel Boone, 4 & 2. Honeywell is matched up against Keenan Royalty for the opening tee of the semi finals on Friday morning. 
 

Royalty won his quarter final match against one of Roaring Gap’s hometown favorites, Ben Jordan, 4 & 3. Royalty had a spectacular showing on his second round of the day, shooting a 3-under-par, 32 on his outward nine. Included in his 32 was a remarkable chip in on No.9 for a smooth birdie. 
 

The second semi-final match will feature the native of Cary, Hampton Roberts and neighboring Holly Spring native Owen Kose. 

 

Kose was relentlessly draining birdie after birdie on his afternoon round to beat Eli Shmidly. After they made the turn, his opposition noted that Kose had just played the greatest nine holes he had witnessed. Part of the pandemonium that the large group of spectators witnessed, started with drained birdie putts on No.6 and No. 8. Those two birdies were followed up by a chip-in from the right side of the ninth green and a massive 10 foot birdie putt on No.10. Kose eventually won the match 4 & 3. 
 

Roberts defeated Brad Grajzar of Elon on the seventeenth green after Grazjar’s par putt lipped out. Roberts won the match 2 & 1.
