Clayton Continues His Lead, NC Junior Boys'

ROARING GAP, N.C. (June 23, 2021) --  Round of 64 and Round of 32 results of the 54th North Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship at Roaring Gap Club in Roaring Gap, N.C. from June 22 - 25, 2021. The entire field competed in the same division and played from 6,348 yards.

Following the stroke play qualifier on Tuesday, the cutline was established at 6-over-par, 77. There were 10 players tied at 6-over-par which forced a playoff for two vacant spots in the Round of 64.

Tyler Dorsey of Charlotte won the first playoff hole against the field with a birdie on No.17. The next player to enter match play was Luke Ward of Arden. Ward would battle his competitors for four holes, until he stuck his tee shot on No.18 to roughly four-feet. Ward drained his birdie putt and would be the last player to enter the Round of 64. 

The No. 61 seeded Cooper Diaz of Winston-Salem was matched up against the No. 4 seeded Davis Delille of High Point and defeated the lower seed 1 up. Diaz advanced to the Round of 32 in the afternoon and defeated the No. 29 seeded Dylan Takenaga of Durham. Diaz will enter the Round of 16 as the highest seed at No.61, followed by No. 40 seeded Connor Warren of Spruce Pine. 

The recipient of medalist honors following his 4-under-par, 67 round on Monday, No.1 seeded Jake Clayton of Burlington, defeated the No.64 Luke Ward 3 & 2 in the round of 64. In the Round of 32 Clayton defeated Crouse 3 & 1.

“On No.18 I hit it down the middle of the fairway which was awesome,” Clayton said following his round. “Then I managed to catch the green with my approach shot which landed about 40 feet from the hole while my competitor was six feet away, however, I managed to make my putt and he didn't so that drained him of his energy.”

No. 9 seeded Daniel Boone of Fuquay Varina showed the field what a true match play format looks like. In both rounds of 64 and of 32 Boone won in 19 holes. Boone defeated the No. 56 Cayden Bryner of Winston - Salem in the morning and then proceeded to defeat the No. 41 Michael La Sasso of Raleigh in the afternoon in an exciting way. Two down with two holes to play, Boone exquisitely birdied Nos. 8 and 9  to extend the match. Boone would drain his third consecutive birdie putt on No.10 to win the match 1 up. 

The No.2 seeded Jack Wieler of Waxhaw was dialed in during his first round matchup against the No. 63 Taylor Dorsey of Charlotte. Wieler would get off to a hot start, birdieing both Nos. 10 and 11. However, Dorsey fought back, winning Nos. 12 and 13 to bring the match to even. Wieler rebounded, winning Nos. 14 and 15 with pars. Wieler continued his hot strike on his back nine, winning two more holes. Wieler won his match 5 & 4. Wieler will advance to the Round of 16 following his 7 & 6  win over Turner Edwards in the Round of 32. 

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer ages 8-18 as of June 25, 2021, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.3.
