Pate Wins 55th Twin States Junior Girls'

 

SHELBY, N.C. (June 22, 2021) -- Final round results from the 55th Twin States Junior Girls Championship at Cleveland Country Club in Shelby, N.C. on June 21, 2021. The field competed at 6,097 yards (par 36-37--73).

In less than a full week, Macy Pate of Winston-Salem captured not one, but two CGA championships. Fresh off of her victory at the 25th playing of the North Carolina Junior Girls, Pate showed no signs of slowing down at Cleveland Country Club.  After a first round 7-Under-Par 66, Pate followed up with a steady final round of 2-Under-Par 71 to come away as the 55th champion of the Twin States Junior Girls’.

 

“It means a lot,” said Pate. “There are so many great names on that trophy and great names on the NC Junior Girls trophy. It means a lot I was able to pull through and get it done both weeks. I was feeling confident coming into this week so I’m really glad I was able to come through and pull it out.” 

 

It wasn’t all sunshine, literally, as rain passed through Shelby, N.C. for much of the first nine holes of the final round. However, Pate remained unbothered, and showed a mental toughness and savvy that is incredibly impressive for a rising high school sophomore. After two birdies to start her round on the second and fourth holes, Pate faltered momentarily with bogeys on the fifth and sixth. A birdie on the Par-4 seventh would get her back on track as she made the turn towards the homeward nine at 1-Under-Par. After a bogey on the Par-3 11th, Pate birdied the next two in a row to get to 9-Under-Par for the championship, and increased her lead to eight strokes with five holes to play. After a bogey on the 16th, Pate collected one more birdie for the championship, rolling one in from eight feet on the finishing Par-4 18th. 

 

“This course you have to play target golf,” said Pate. You gotta hit it a certain distance and you gotta hit it on the green. I’ve been hitting my irons good. I hit them good last week and that came through this week. I gave myself a lot of birdie looks and my putter got hot yesterday.” 

 

With her win today, Pate also joins Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C., as only the second player to win both the North Carolina Junior Girls’, and Twin States Junior Girls’ Championships in the same year, with Hawkins accomplishing the feat in the 2018 season. To continue in her historic victory, Pate also made birdie on a ridiculous 14 of 36 holes played in the Championship. She set the scoring record as well for the tournament, scoring a 137, which shattered the previous low of 140 set by Gina Kim of Chapel Hill, N.C., in 2013 and Tuuie Timmons of Lake City, S.C., in 1984. Pate’s performance is even more impressive considering how difficult Cleveland Country Club played this week, as she was the only competitor to finish under par for the Championship. 

 

“My parents have helped me a lot,” said Pate. “They’re always supporting me. They drive me to and from the golf course. I’d like to thank my coach Brad Luebchow for helping me out all the time and spending so much time with me.” 

 

Nicole Nash of Charlotte, N.C., and Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C. also played great golf this week, finishing in a tie for second at 3-Over-Par. Rounding out the top five was Anna Howerton of Winston-Salem, N.C., who finished in solo fourth at 4-Over-Par, and Mary Kathryn Talledo of Spartanburg, S.C., who finished in solo fifth with a score of 7-Over-Par.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
