Fresh off a victory at the 25th playing of the North Carolina Junior Girls Championship, Macy Pate of Winston-Salem, N.C. continued to build off of that stellar play and momentum at Cleveland Country Club for the first round of the 55th Twin States Junior Girls’ Championship. Pate would turn in a scorecard that included eight birdies on her day en route to a 7-under-par, 66, which was the lone score under par on the day.

After four pars to start her round, Pate was spurred on by a stretch of terrific golf that included six birdies in nine holes, with the birdies coming on holes five, six, seven, nine, 12 and 13. After a small misstep on the par-4 15th that saw Pate make her first bogey of the day, she quickly got it back with birdies on 17 and 18 to cap off a phenomenal first round.

Nicole Nash of Charlotte, N.C. turned in a very steady round of even par and was the only competitor to shoot 73 for the first round. Nash, coming off a semifinal appearance at the North Carolina Junior Girls’ Championship, carded four birdies on her day and tied for the second most in the field with birdies on holes five, 12, 13 and 14. This isn’t the first time these two will square off in the last week, as Nash will look to avenge her semifinal loss to Pate at the North Carolina Junior Girls’ Championship as the two face off in Tuesday’s final pairing.

Rounding out the top five is Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C., who sits in solo third at two-over-par, and Anna Howerton also of Winston-Salem, N.C. who sits in a tie for fourth with Sarah Boteler of Greenville, S.C., at three-over-par for the championship. Howerton and Boteler are also tied with Nash for the second most birdies on the day, with Howerton picking hers up on holes one, five, 16 and 18. Boteler carded her birdies on holes three, seven, 13 and 16.

The Twin States Junior Girls’ Championship will finish on Tuesday with the final round at Cleveland Country Club, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
