49th South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship: Round of 32 & 16 Recap

 

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (June 18, 2021) -- The results from the first round of match play at the 49th South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at Mount Vintage Golf Club (Chester/Vintage) in North Augusta, S.C. on June 18, 2021. The field is competing at 7,090 yards (par 36-36--72).

The first round of match play at the 49th South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship was a morning full of clutch plays and several upsets. The largest margin of victory from the Round of 32 came from Grainger Howle of Darlington, S.C., the No. 21 seed, knocking off No. 12 seed Brandon Hiott of Walterboro, S.C. 8 & 7. 

 

Two pairings went into 19 holes to decide who would move onto the Round of 16. The No. 14 seed Connor Fahey of Greenville, S.C., who was the low medalist for Carolinas Amateur Championship qualifying on Wednesday, won in extra holes against No. 19 seed Christian Sease of Greenville, N.C. to secure his spot in the next round of matchplay. The No. 5 seed Garrett Cooper of Cowpens, S.C. defeated the No. 28 seed Luke Cashion of Seneca, S.C. on the first playoff hole and moved onto the Round of 16.

 

Francis Marion University teammates Mitchell Vance of Hartsville, S.C. and Michael Rials of Florence, S.C. were matched up against each other. Vance, the No. 2 seed, got off to a strong start on the front nine, winning four holes in a row. The No. 31 seed Rials then took over on No. 6 and won the next three holes additionally, tying Vance for the lead. After Rials won two more holes on the back nine, Vance took over and won three holes to close the match defeating Rials 2 & 1.

 

The No. 1 seed Brian Quackenbush of Aiken, S.C. defeated No. 32 seed and 2009 South Carolina Amateur Match Play Champion Crawford Reeves of Taylors, S.C. 4 & 2. Quackenbush chipped in for birdie on No. 2 and made a long, winding putt for birdie on No. 4 to get an early edge on Crawford. Quackenbush and Reeves both won two holes each on the back nine, but Quackenbush ultimately pulled ahead with the win on No. 16 with a birdie.

Round of 16 Results

 

The second round of match play was full of more fireworks. The largest margin of victory from the Round of 16 came from the No. 3 seed Nick Mayfield of Rock Hill, S.C. defeating the No. 14 seed Connor Fahey of Greenville, S.C. 5 & 4. 

 

Mayfield, a rising junior on the men’s team at the University of South Carolina was tied with Fahey through four holes, then he birdied No. 5, eagled No. 6. and birdied No. 8. Mayfield carried that momentum into the back nine where he proceeded to win three more holes and earn his spot into Saturday’s quarterfinals match play. 

 

One of several close matches this Friday afternoon was No. 1 seed Brian Quackenbush of Aiken, S.C. facing off against No. 16 seed and rising Charleston Southern senior Caleb Loudin of Summerville, S.C. Quackenbush found a good adversary in Loudin as the two went back and forth winning holes until they were all tied up through No. 13. Quackenbush ultimately defeated Loudin 1 up. 

 

Jason Steiner of Fort Mill, S.C. defeated Wofford College senior Nick Willis of Cowpens, S.C. 1 up after Steiner holed out for an eagle on No. 13 from 140 yards out. Steiner will be facing off in the Quarterfinals against Mitchell Vance on Saturday.
