Tindal Takes the Carolinas Women's Amateur Lead

 

MONROE, N.C. (June 10, 2021) -- First round results of the 95th Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship at Rolling Hills Country Club in Monroe, N.C. on June 10, 2021. The Championship Division is competing at 6,271 yards and the Carolinas Division is competing at 5,386 yards (par 36-36--72).

Rolling Hills Country Club is in pristine condition this week, which makes it the ideal stage for the 95th Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship. The field is deep and talented with many players vying for top individual finishes and to represent their college teams in the Inaugural Collegiate Cup Championship. 

 

Jodee Tindal of Rock Hill, S.C. has taken an early lead after firing off an impressive opening round of 3-under-par, 69. The College of Charleston senior had four birdies, 13 pars and only one bogey in her round. Crediting her clean scorecard to hard work and playing strategically, Tindal said, “for the last month or two I have really been working hard on playing smart golf. I think I did a good job of that today.”

 

Tindal mainly kept her drives down the fairway and aimed small for the greens. “I didn’t try to cut any corners on all of these doglegs out here, I aimed for the middle of the green on a lot of them and then when I had a wedge in my hand I went for it more.”

 

When asked about her mindset for round two, Tindal said “I am really going to try and keep the same mindset from here on out to try to keep it as smart as possible and see where that takes me.”

 

Kiera Bartholomew of Wake Forest, N.C. and Victoria Ladd of Greensboro, N.C. are tied for second position entering the second round with first-round scores of 2-under-par, 70. 

Bartholomew, a rising high school junior at North Raleigh Christian Academy was named North Carolina Girls’ Player of the Year in 2020. Her opening round consisted of three birdies, one bogey and 14 pars. On her round today, Bartholomew commented, “I think my strength today was my iron play. I hit nearly every green in regulation. When you get on there you have more birdie opportunities.”

 

Ladd, a rising junior at Western Carolina University, carded an impressive six birdies and eight pars in her round today. “I haven’t played in a competitive round in a while, so I was a little nervous off the first tee,” she said. “But I started out with a strong par so that set the tone and I thought the day would be fine.” Ladd had a roller coaster of birdies and bogeys on the back nine, but she finished 1-under-par, 35 on the inward nine.

 

There is a four-way-tie for fourth position at even-par, 72 between Anna Howerton of Winston-Salem, N.C., Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C., Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C. and Isabella Britt of Chesnee, S.C.

 

This year we have a new addition to the championship called the Collegiate Cup. The Collegiate Cup is a team competition contested during the Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship and is open to players currently enrolled at a college/university, players who will be enrolled by September 15, 2021, or graduated from a college/university in 2021. These players are eligible to represent their school in the Collegiate Cup. The top-two 54-hole scores from players representing a college/university will be combined to create a team score.

 

For the Inaugural Collegiate Cup Championship, College of Charleston is at the top of the leaderboard with a combined score of 3-under-par with a 3-under-par, 69 from senior Jodee Tindal and an even-par, 72 from rising freshman Isabella Britt. Furman University is in second position with a combined score of 2-over-par, contributed by the defending champion Anna Morgan of Spartanburg, S.C. and Sophia Burnett of Bluffton, S.C. who both carded 1-over-par, 73.

 

In the Carolinas Division, the reigning Carolinas Senior Women’s Amateur champion Pam Prescott of Piedmont, S.C. leads the field at 2-over-par, 74. Peyton O’Brien of Clemson, S.C. is just one shot off of Prescott’s lead at 3-over-par, 75 in the opening round.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.
