Preview: 17th N.C. Senior Women's Amateur

 

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (May 14, 2021) -- The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 17th North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Highland Country Club in Fayetteville, N.C. from May 17 - 18, 2021. The championship division will compete at 5,350 yards and the Carolinas division will compete at 5,035 yards (par 36-36--72).

Top 30 Ranked Carolinas Senior Women in the Field:

 

  • Pat Brogden of Garner, N.C. is the defending champion and has won this event six times, in 2007, 2010, 2012, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Last summer she won the Carolinas Division of Carolinas Women’s Four-Ball. A win this week would tie Brogden with Page Marsh Lea for the second most CGA women’s championship titles at 16, second only to Patty Moore. 

 

  • Brenda Kuehn of Asheville, N.C. is the No. 4 ranked golfer in the Carolinas Senior Women’s rankings. She finished fourth at the Carolinas Senior Women’s Amateur Championship last fall and is a Wake Forest Sports Hall of Famer. 

 

  • Patty Moore of Pinehurst, N.C. is the No. 6 ranked golfer in the Carolinas Senior Women’s rankings. She is a four-time North Carolina's Senior Women’s Amateur Champion and four-time runner-up. Most recently, she finished sixth at the 22nd Senior National Club Championship in 2020. Moore has more CGA championship titles under her belt than any other woman, 21 championships, and she is looking to earn her 22nd this week.

     

  • Kim Briele of New Bern, N.C. captured the 12th North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur at Starmount Forest in 2015 and went on to win the Carolinas Senior Women’s Amateur in 2016. She is looking for her fourth CGA championship title this week. 

 

  • Angela Stewart of Greenville, N.C., is a two-time CGA champion including her win at the North Carolina Senior Women's Amateur Championship most recently in 2011. She has been the runner-up twice, in 2015 and 2018.

     

  • Kendra Muir of Pinehurst, N.C. is the No. 10 ranked golfer in the Carolinas Senior Women’s rankings. She finished tied for ninth at the Carolinas Senior Women’s Amateur last fall and is a member of the Pinehurst Country Club team that has won the Carolinas Women’s Club Team Championship three times.

Highland Country Club is located right outside the historic district of Fayetteville, N.C. This Donald Ross designed course features Bermuda fairways and Bent grass greens. This is the first North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur Championship hosted at Highland Country Club.

 

The Championship is contested at 36 holes of stroke play with a Championship Division and Carolinas Division (shorter course). Players have the option to compete in either the Championship Division or Carolinas Division. Players are pre-flighted within their division based on Handicap Index. The overall champion can come from any flight within the Championship division. The Carolinas division plays a shorter course and is ineligible for the overall championship.


Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 50th birthday by May 18, 2021, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN ® USGA Handicap Index ® at a CGA member club.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)


The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
