Beautiful weather set the stage at River Landing for the opening round of the 35th North Carolina Senior Amateur Championship, which led to some low rounds today. James Pearson of Charlotte, N.C. fired off a 6-under-par, 66 to take an early lead.

Consistency was key for Pearson with a bogey-free, 3-under-par, 33 on the front nine. He carded four more birdies on the back nine to finish the round atop the leaderboard. Pearson is the 2014 North Carolina Senior Amateur Champion.

The defending champion, Steve Harwell of Mooresville, N.C. is tied in second position with 9-time North Carolina Senior Amateur champion, Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C. at 5-under-par, 67. Simson played a bogey-free round and birdied the first five holes, while Harwell carded seven birdies on the day.

Walker Taylor of Wilmington, N.C. holds fourth position after a 4-under-par, 68 opening round. William Banta of Jacksonville, N.C. and Keith Kepley of Charlotte, N.C. are just one stroke behind him after carding 3-under-par, 69 to tie for fifth position.

The second round will begin tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. with starting times until 2:58 p.m. After the second round, the field will be cut to low 60 scores and ties for the final round on Thursday.
