Mathews Takes an Early Lead at The Vicki

 

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 1, 2021) -- First round results of the 16th Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls’ Championship at Pine Island Country Club in Charlotte, N.C. on May 1, 2021. The field is competing at 6,203 yards (par 35-37--72).

Pine Island Country Club played tough for the field in the first round of the 16th Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls’ Championship, but three players managed to finish under par. Emily Mathews of Mebane, N.C. leads the field at 5-under-par after an opening round 67, which included six birdies and only one bogey at the treacherous Pine Island Country Club.


“My putter was working for me,” said Mathews. “I was very strategic with my approach shots to be careful with where I placed it on the green and from there I was just making 15 and 20-footers over and over again.”


Mathews is no stranger to leading a CGA championship. Last year, Mathews won the Dogwood State Junior Girls’ Championship. “Being in the lead is honestly just a motivator to go out there and pull ahead even further tomorrow and just stay in my bubble,” she said.


Only two shots off the lead, Mary Kathryn Talledo of Spartanburg, S.C. finished the day at 3-under-par, 69 after five birdies on the day. Talledo is the No. 4 ranked player in the Carolinas and is looking for her first CGA victory.


“I had a lot of adrenaline for the whole round, because this is the hardest I have worked on my game and I haven’t been able to show it in a tournament until today,” said Talledo. “I am playing well so I will just play my best tomorrow and see where that puts me.”


It would be unwise to count out Elizabeth Rudisill of Charlotte, N.C. who also finished under par today with a 1-under-par, 71. Rudisill finished tied for fourth at last year’s championship in November and also seeks her first CGA victory. Last year’s North Carolina Junior Girls’ Player of the Year, Kiera Bartholomew of Wake Forest, N.C. and Ella Perna of Durham, N.C. finished with even par, 72 today and are in the hunt for their first CGA victories as well.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
