Teaster and Weston Capture the Carolinas Senior Four-Ball

 

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (April 22, 2021) -- Final results of the 53rd Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship at Orangeburg Country Club in Orangeburg, S.C. on April 22, 2021. The field competed at 6,600 yards (par 36-36--72).

Tim Teaster of Cayce, S.C. and Rich Weston of Pawleys Island, S.C. came from behind and captured the 53rd Carolinas Senior Four-Ball Championship with a strong 13-under-par, 203 total finish.


The duo started the day five shots back from the lead with a plan to go low enough to climb to the top. Weston remarked, “Honestly, I was thinking that we needed to make five or six birdies. The course gives me a lot of opportunities with my length and Tim is long so we have a lot of opportunities on par-5s. Today was a matter of making putts.”


Teaster and Weston got off to a slow start, missing putts for birdie on Nos. 1 and 2. It wasn’t until Weston sank an unbelievable 50-footer on No. 4 that the momentum started to build. After a 12-footer par save from Teaster on No. 5, the side continued to heat up. With birdies on Nos. 8, 11 and 12, they had made a big enough move to tie for the lead on No. 13.


On the 15th tee, Orangeburg Country Club member Teaster and his partner Weston took a look at the leaderboard to see that they were tied for the lead with Gary Robinson of Fayetteville, N.C. and Preston Edmondson of Morrisville, N.C. Until that moment they believed they were at least three shots back.


Robinson and Edmondson came into the final round on top at 13-under-par after two excellent opening rounds. Today, they weren’t able to gain that same momentum that they had in the first two rounds. They were 1-over-par on the day, when they reached No. 15.


Weston took an aggressive approach to No. 15 after the realization that they had a shot at the title and chipped in from behind the green for a game-changing birdie. The side cruised in with another birdie on No. 16 to claim their first CGA championship title.


The newly-minted champions finished the round at 5-under-par, 67 which was the lowest round of the day by three strokes, likely due to the cold and windy conditions. Robinson and Edmondson claimed runner-up just one stroke off the lead at 12-under-par, 204 overall.


“Any time you beat the guys that we ended up getting the best of here, you have to be proud of yourself,” said Teaster. “These guys were really good. We have played with most of them and they are all great guys, but we were just able to make the putts when we had to.”


Randall Sullins of Claremont, N.C. and Phil Bland of Waynesville, N.C. tied with Walter Todd of Laurens, S.C. and Todd Hendley of Columbus, N.C. for third. These sides finished the championship at 9-under-par, 207 total.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)
 

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.

The CGA annually conducts 48 championships and five team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. It also runs over 150 One-Day (net and gross) events as well as qualifying for USGA national championships. The CGA serves golf in the Carolinas with numerous programs such as: the USGA Handicap System; tournament management software and support; course measuring and course/slope ratings; agronomy consultation; answers about the Rules of Golf, Rules of Amateur Status, and Handicapping; Carolinas Golf Magazine; Interclub series; Tarheel Youth Golf Association; Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame; expense assistance for USGA Junior and Girls' Junior qualifiers from the Carolinas; and the Carolinas Golf Foundation (CGF). The CGF has distributed nearly $2,000,000 since 1977 to benefit Carolinas' golf initiatives including junior and women's programs.
