Parks and Owens Secure Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball

 

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (October 7, 2020) -- Final results of the 9th Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball Championship at Mount Vintage Golf Club (Independent and Vintage courses) in North Augusta, S.C. on October 7, 2020. The 65+ Division competed at 6,013 yards, par 72 and the 70+ Division competed at 5,675 yards, par 72.

Charlie Parks of Asheboro, N.C. and Doug Owens of Albemarle, N.C. captured the 9th Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball Championship after a 15-under-par, 129 total finish. The newly minted CGA champions climbed from a tie for third to the top of the leaderboard after tying the low round of the week at 9-under-par, 63 in the final round. 

 

Parks birdied two out of the first three holes and then Owens birdied four out of the next five to make the turn at 6-under-par on the day, which was also their total score for round one. 

 

“I was looking at the scores and I saw that we had gone into first place. So I asked Doug (Owens) if he wanted to know and he said no,” said Parks. “He was playing so well, there was no way I was going to tell him.” 

 

Parks and Owens birdied Nos. 11, 12 and 16 on the back to take the lead by three strokes heading down the stretch. However in the group behind them, Paul Simson and Don Detweiler of Raleigh, N.C. made a big move with an eagle on No. 16. 

 

“We had a good lead, but any time you have Paul (Simson) behind you, you’re looking over your shoulder,” said Parks. “On No. 16 we birdied it to lead by three and then I looked at my phone on 17 tee to see that Paul (Simson) and Don (Detweiler) eagled it so we were back to a one shot lead.”

 

The long-time four-ball partners managed two strong pars on their way in to keep the lead and eventually take the title. This is both Parks’ and Owens’ first CGA championship title. As Owens remarked, “our partnership just works out really well.”

 

Two-time Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball Champions, Simson and Detweiler finished just one shot behind Parks and Owens at 14-under-par, 130 overall to claim runners-up.

 

Cliff Seastrunk and Lennie Barton of Raleigh, N.C. claimed solo third at 11-under-par, 133 total. Round one leaders, Bob Edens of Moncks Corner, S.C. and Steve Horton of Columbia, S.C. finished in fourth at 9-under-par, 135 overall. 

 

70+ Division round one leaders, Robert Desjardins of Matthews, N.C. and William Boles of Wilson, N.C. claimed victory at 13-under-par, 131 total. They also tied the low round of the championship finishing 9-under-par, 63 today in the final round. 

 

Desjardins and Boles have been four-ball partners for over 17 years and this win is very special to them. “These CGA events keep us engaged with golf,” said Boles. “At 72 years old it’s easy to just walk away from it, but these events have kept us motivated to keep playing.” Desjardins added, “This is a big deal for us. It really is.”

 

Ernie Newton of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Larry Boswell of High Point, N.C. are the 70+ Division runners-up at 6-under-par, 138 total. Just one stroke behind them is a two-way tie for third at 5-under-par, 137 overall. Bob Rickman of Orangeburg, S.C. and Bob Varn of Florence, S.C. as well as Jerry Hartsell of Matthews, N.C. and Vardaman Banks of Midland, N.C. tied for third.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.

The CGA annually conducts 48 championships and five team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. It also runs over 150 One-Day (net and gross) events as well as qualifying for USGA national championships. The CGF has distributed nearly $2,000,000 since 1977 to benefit Carolinas' golf initiatives including junior and women's programs.
