Kiawah Island Resort’s Cougar Point provided incredible views and a challenging track for the 15th Carolinas Mixed Team Championship today. With an hour long rain delay and lots of wind, the course did no favors but the players prevailed and turned in quite a few low rounds.

Rachel Wyatt and Kyle Weiland of Charleston, S.C. carded an impressive 6-under-par, 66 to take an early lead overall. In the championship division, they hold a two stroke lead going into the final round tomorrow. As Kiawah Island Resort staff, they are happy to show out on their home turf.

“I think that our strength was Rachel's playing,” said Weiland with a big laugh. “We gave ourselves a lot of chances in the beginning. We birdied three of the first five holes to just get in a groove and we put ourselves in good spots to give putts a run,” said Wyatt.

A tie has taken the top of the senior division with Paige and Mark Walker of Greensboro, N.C. and Lea Anne Brown and Mark Hoover of Mount Pleasant, S.C. carding 5-under-par, 67’s heading into the modified alternate shot round tomorrow. The super senior division is also led by a tie at 4-under-par, 68. Dennis Slezak and Brenda Frye of Mount Pleasant, S.C. and Betty and Joseph Armbruster of Simpsonville S.C. hold the tie for first. In the tournament division, playing a shorter course, Suzanne and Jason Gabriel of Claremont, N.C. hold a two stroke lead at 4-under-par, 68.

The final round tomorrow will be contested at Kiawah Island Resort’s Turtle Point. The format is 18 holes of modified alternate shot to determine the 15th Carolinas Mixed Team Champions.
