Jang Holds 9 Stroke Lead Entering Carolinas Girls' Final Round

The second round of the 64th Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship at the Country Club of Asheville brought much of the same as the first round. The course played tough and Hyo Joon Jang of Bluffton, S.C. finished as the low score of the day, coming in as the only player under-par for the second day in a row. She holds a nine-stroke lead at 6-under-par, 136 total.

 

Jang started her day off with nine straight pars on the front nine. While most people would call that consistent, she wasn’t nearly as satisfied with her play, missing two greens in regulation.

 

“Actually, I didn’t see that as consistent. For me, it means that I didn’t focus well,” Jang said.
“The front nine is simpler since there are two par-5s. I was trying to make more birdies, but it didn’t work.”

 

Jang quickly ended her streak of pars after the turn with a birdie on No. 10. She made a “frustrating bogey” on No. 16, the longest hole on the course and toughest on the back nine, before turning things around for a “memorable birdie” on the tough par-3 17th hole.

 

“Today I just tried to hydrate a lot since it was a long day,” Jang said. “The girls that I played with were really sweet, so talking to them was a great distraction and it helped me play better on the back nine. I try not to get emotional during my rounds because golf is a long day.”

 

Jang expects another long day tomorrow with potential inclement weather in the forecast, but noted that she feels good entering the final round.

 

McKenzie Daffin of Fort Bragg, N.C. and Adrian Anderson of Murrells Inlet, S.C. begin Thursday’s action tied for second at 3-over-par, 145 total. They will play in the final group alongside Jang, teeing off at 10:09 a.m. Molly Hardwick of Lexington, S.C. and Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C. round out the top-five at 4-over-par, 146 total and 5-over-par, 147 total respectively.

 

The final round of the 64th Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship begins tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.
