Jang Dominates Round 1 of Carolinas Junior Girls'

 

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (JULY 21, 2020) -- The results from the first round of the 64th Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship at Country Club of Asheville in Asheville, N.C. on July 21, 2020.  (5,975 yards, par 36-35--71)

With a dominant opening round on Tuesday at the challenging Country Club of Asheville, Hyo Joon Jang of Bluffton, S.C. took the lead at the 64th Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship, shooting a 5-under-par, 66. Her score breaks the course record for women by several strokes. 

 

Jang made three birdies in a row on Nos. 2, 3 and 4 to get her round going and used that momentum to propel her to a total of six birdies on the day.

 

“Making three birdies in a row was pretty lucky and it set the tone for the rest of my round,” Jang said. “I took that momentum into the back nine to help me finish 5-under. I gave myself many chances on the greens today, which was key, too.”

 

Jang made a bogey on No. 7, which she said was a simple mistake due to putting. However, she quickly fixed the mistake before the turn, as demonstrated by her birdie on No. 9 as well as the two on the back nine. Jang attributed her ability to make adjustments on the fly to her focus on her swing as opposed to her score.

 

“On the back nine, the course was very hilly so I was just focusing on conserving my energy,” Jang said. “I still missed a few putts today, so I will try my best to fix that tomorrow.”

 

Jang’s great round on the Donald Ross design speaks for itself, but to get a sense for just how impressive her day was, we spoke with Assistant Golf Professional Michael Lee.

 

“The big ones that stand out are holes No. 2 and 4. Those are the two hardest handicap holes on the front nine,” Lee said. “No. 4 is a long, tough driving hole because as you tee off, the hole narrows along a creek that crosses across the middle. Your second shot has to go up and over the creek to an elevated, multi-tiered green. No. 16 as well. That’s our longest hole on the golf course.”

 

Reigning North Carolina Junior Girls’ Champion, Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C. finished the day in second place at 1-over-par, 72. She rode a roller coaster today with four birdies and five bogeys on the card, and will look for a more consistent round tomorrow.

 

Molly Hardwick of Lexington, S.C., Alexia Siehl of Fort Mill, S.C. and McKenzie Daffin of Fort Bragg, N.C. sit in a three-way tie for third, having carded matching 2-over-par, 73’s. 

 

The second round of the 64th Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship begins tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. at Country Club of Asheville. Starting times run through noon with today’s lowest scores teeing off last.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers. The CGA is the second largest golf association in the country with over 700 member clubs represented by nearly 150,000 individuals.
