Stroke Play Qualifying Results:

The first two days at Cedar Rock Country Club have been stop and go between rain delays, but on Wednesday there was a lull long enough to get in 18 holes. With wet conditions, tee time uncertainty and unseasonably cold temperatures, one would expect to see higher scores. That is not the case in today’s strong field.

Maria Atwood of Holly Springs, N.C. was the only player to finish in red numbers with a 1-under-par, 71 finish to be the Stroke Play Qualifying Medalist.

“I felt great when I was playing today. I hit a lot of fairways and greens, which was great considering the wet conditions.” said Atwood.

Atwood made the turn with an even-par, 36. With a bogey on No. 11 she tipped above par, but not for long. She sealed her under-par finish with an eagle on No. 16.

“I just bombed it off the tee. Then I hit a great hybrid shot up on the green and managed to make the putt,” said Atwood. “It definitely boosted my momentum to finish strong.”

Macy Pate of Boone, N.C. and Kiera Bartholomew of Wake Forest, N.C. tied for second with matching 3-over-par, 75’s. Just one stroke behind them is another tie, this one for fourth place. Kayla Dowell of Mebane, N.C. and Ellen Yu of High Point, N.C. both carded 4-over-par, 76 to secure their spots in the Round of 16 as well.

The cut line for the Round of 16 was 10-over-par, 82. Players were seeded based on qualifying score and any ties for seeds were decided by blind draw. Matches began at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday.

Round of 16 Results:

Maria Atwood of Holly Springs, N.C. was the No. 1 seed in this round. Atwood defeated Grace Holcomb of Wilmington, N.C. 3 and 2 and will be facing off against Leah Edwards of Greensboro, N.C. in the Quarterfinals.

The biggest upset of the round took place as the 12th seed, Ella Perna of Durham, N.C. defeated the fifth seed, Ellen Yu of High Point, N.C. 3 and 2. Two out of eight lower seeds won their matches and will be moving on to the Quarterfinals.
