Tie Atop Leaderboard at Carolinian Amateur Between Stephenson, Lascola and Brown

 

Buies Creek, N.C. (June 12, 2020) -- The results from the first round of the 5th Carolinian Amateur at Keith Hills Golf Club in Buies Creek, N.C. from June 12, 2020. (6,717 yards, par 36-36--72)

The first round of the 5th Carolinian Amateur ended with a three-way tie atop the leaderboard between Patrick Stephenson of Four Oaks, N.C., Gus Lascola of Durham, N.C. and Nic Brown of Wendell, N.C. Each of the Tar Heel State natives shot a first-round 70 to finish the day 2-under-par, however, they got it done in different ways.

 

Stephenson, who recently graduated from East Carolina University, made five birdies on the day, including three in the final six holes. He said that his putting kept him alive today as he wasn’t striking the ball well and was forced to save par several times on the front nine.

 

“I need my putter to stay consistent,” Stephenson said entering Saturday. “If I start hitting it better, my score is going to be even better than it was today. Hopefully I can just hit it a little bit better tomorrow, be more stress free and have a little more fun.”

 

As for Lascola and Brown, both players were satisfied with their performances off of the tee, and felt that their strategies entering the day helped them finish atop the leaderboard.

 

Lascola, a rising junior on the men’s golf team at Cornell University, tried to stay patient and only use his driver when necessary. Brown, playing in his first tournament since his junior season at Wingate University was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, also focused on a strategy of hitting fairways coming into the day. Lascola said that he only missed one fairway all day.

 

“I played smart today, and I didn’t try to force anything,” Lascola said. “My two bogies were when I tried to force a shot. My strategy got me into the lead after the first day, I’m just going to stay patient, I’m going to go work on my putting stroke and hopefully I can get some more in tomorrow.

 

“I kept it in play,” Brown added. “That was the game plan. Keep it in the fairway. This is a golf course that penalizes people that don’t hit it well off the tee, so I made sure that I kept in the fairway and attacked from there.”

 

Defending champion Fulton Smith of Pinehurst, N.C. and Daniel Neveu, also of Pinehurst, N.C., are both one shot off of the lead and tied for fourth at 1-under-par, 71.

 

The second round of the 5th Carolinian Amateur begins tomorrow, Saturday, June 13, at 8:00 a.m.

 

The Carolinian Amateur format is 54 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 70 scores and ties. Entry is open to any male golfer who has reached his 16th birthday by the first round, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a member club that does not exceed 10.4.  There is no residency requirement for this tournament.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)

The CGA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization that was founded in 1909 to promote and to protect the game of golf in the Carolinas by providing competitions, education, support and benefits to golf clubs and golfers.
