Kathryn Carson of Mooresville, N.C. took the lead at the 94th Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship on Wednesday after a 3-under-par, 69 showing, which tied the low-round of the day. Carson’s two-day total of 2-over-par, 146 will give her a one-stroke lead heading into the final round.
“I started off a little shaky then knocked it close on No. 3, made that birdie and got a little momentum going,” Carson said. “Then I just kept knocking it close. I made a bunch of four-footers for birdie.”
Carson, a rising senior on the East Carolina University golf team, finished above par on her first two holes but finished by making birdie on six of the last 16 and no worse than par down the stretch. She’s won major tournaments before - she is the defending North Carolina Women’s Amateur champion and last won a CGA event at the 2017 North Carolina Junior Girls’ Championship - and has a plan in mind for how she’s going to do it again.
“I’m going to go home, get some rest and show up fresh for tomorrow morning,” Carson said. “I’m hitting it great, I feel like my putting is where it should be now so I’m feeling good.”
Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C. also had a strong round, finishing at 3-over-par, 147 total going into the final round.
“I started out well, I didn’t do as well around the middle, but I brought it back,” Ketchum said.
Ketchum played solid golf today, ending with 12 pars and three birdies. She said that she was happy with the way she was hitting it throughout the day.
Ketchum plans to stay consistent going into tomorrow, focusing on making a few more putts. “I’m excited, I didn’t really come into this tournament thinking I would place or anything, so I’m feeling pretty good,” Ketchum said.
Kayla Smith of Burlington, N.C., Rachel Kuehn Asheville, N.C. and Nicole Adam of Pinehurst, N.C. enter the final round of the tournament tied for third and four strokes back each at 6-over-par, 150 total. Smith’s second round 69 tied Carson’s for the low round of the day, and the pair of 69’s are the only sub-par rounds in 36 holes of competition.
Finally, in the Carolinas Division, there wasn’t much movement on the leaderboard as Lea Anne Brown of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Pam Prescott of Piedmont, S.C. and Patty Moore of Pinehurst, N.C. still hold the top three spots, just as they entered the day. Brown, at 10-over-par, 154 total, leads Prescott and Moore by three and five strokes respectively.
The final round of action at Bermuda Run Country Club begins tomorrow, Thursday, June 4, at 7:30 a.m. with a double-tee start.
