321 Golf Rounds Posted in 365 Days

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -- Do you play a lot of golf, or maybe you wish you did? Thirty-two golfers in the Carolinas posted at least 250 scores during 2014. The top-ten golfers are listed below. We caught up with one of those top score-posters, Tom O’Halloran, from The Golf Club at Wescott Plantation in Summerville, S.C.

How does Mr. O’Halloran manage to play so many golf rounds? All but 21 of the 321 posted scores were played at his 27-hole home golf club. The 66-year-old retired government contractor and Navy veteran is single and lives alone at his home near the seventh hole of the Oak Forest routing. He has two tee times a day booked on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The other days of the week he plays in mini-tournaments. He is the Interclub Director for Team Westcott in the Charleston Area Men’s League. There were another ten or so rounds – scrambles and alternate-shot formats – he played and did not post.

O’Halloran began 2014 with a 14.3 Handicap Index and ended it as a 15.4. His lowest career Index is 11.1. He aims to get down to a 10.0. He has the golf game for it, twice posting career-low rounds of 73. He is also dedicated; the worst weather he played in this year was 23 degrees on a blustery day. “That was dumb,” said O’Halloran. “But we survived.”

An avid fisherman, O’Halloran moved south to spend time on the water. When he started playing golf in 2007, it took over a year for him to break 100. But he was hooked and a passion for golf overtook fishing. It is understandable that he has only been fishing twice since taking up golf. Compared to 2012, when he posted 368 rounds of golf, 2014 was a slow year.

The Carolinas Golf Foundation will hold a Per Round Pledge fundraising drive for 2015. Each participating golfer pledges an amount they wish to donate per golf round posted this year (1/1/15-12/31/15). The CGA will track rounds posted using clubs' handicap software and contact golfers for payment at the conclusion of the season. The golfer with the top pledge-amount donated will receive a CGA prize pack.

Not sure how many rounds you posted in 2014? If your club uses the GHIN system, you can view the # of scores from the last 12 months in the 'Stats' portion of the mobile app and the 'Find a Round' area of eGolfer
