It’s hardly a surprise to see the names atop the leaderboard after round one of the 3rd N.C. Super Senior Four-Ball Championship. Don Detweiler of Raleigh and Paul Simson of Raleigh have two of the strongest track record in CGA Championships, both individually and as a team.

Last October, the duo paired up to claim the title at the 7th Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball Championship at Camden Country Club in Camden, S.C. This year, they lead the Championship Division heading into the final round after carding six birdies, one eagle and one bogey to shoot a first round score of 7-under 65 on Pinewild’s Magnolia Course.

The team of Lawrence Hicks of Greensboro and Alan Dirk of Pittsboro as well as the team of Jody Honeycutt of Albemarle and Doug Owens of Albemarle fired first round scores of 4-under 68 to put them only three shots off the leaders heading into the final round.

Seven more teams in the Championship Division shot under par in the first round of the championship.

In the 70+ Division, things are a bit tighter at the top with Gene Grubb of Greensboro and Rick Wesley of Winston-Salem, leading the way after a first round 5-under 67. Several teams are hot on their tails including Charles Debnam of Cary and Bill Eskridge of Cary who shot a bogey-free first round of 4-under 68.
