Preview: 3rd North Carolina Super Sr. Four-Ball

 

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (March 20, 2019) — In the first two years of the North Carolina Super Senior Four-Ball Championship, one team has risen above the rest.

 

Russ Perry of Winston-Salem and Mark Stephens of Troutman won the title in both of the first two years of the championship. In its third year, the championship is guaranteed a new winning team as Stephens has moved out of the Carolinas and is no longer eligible to defend.

 

This year, Perry will look reclaim the magic he found the first two years of the event, only this time with a new partner on his side; Ed Battle of Winston-Salem.

Originally designed by Gene Hamm, the par-72 Magnolia Course at Pinewild Country Club opened to rave reviews in 1989, and within two months was ranked as one of the top 50 courses in the entire southeastern United States by Golfweek. The course is characterized by vast elevation changes, generous driving areas, and challenging greens. This will be the 16th CGA Championship contested at Pinewild Country Club’s Magnolia Course.

 

Fifty two-person teams will compete in 36 holes of four-ball stroke play at Pinewild Country Club’s Magnolia Course. Notable teams include:

• Russ Perry and Ed Battle of Winston-Salem, N.C. Perry, a six-time CGA champion, claimed the 2010 Carolinas Senior Amateur and 2013 North Carolina Senior Amateur titles. His four other titles come in four-ball events. Perry was also named the 2018 CGA Super Senior Player of the Year.
   
• Robert Desjardins of Matthews, N.C. and Bill Boles, Jr. of Wilson, N.C. Last year’s runners up made a strong fight for the title, but were not able to keep up with the eventual champions. This team captured the North Carolina Senior Four-Ball in 2006. Desjardins won the North Carolina Super Senior in 2015. Boles is also a five-time CGA winner, including two Carolinas Four-Ball victories.
   
• Six-time CGA champion Arlis Pike of Kernersville, N.C. and Charlie Parks of Asheboro, N.C. Pike won three consecutive Carolinas Super Senior titles from 2013 to 2015 and the North Carolina Super Senior in 2017. Pike and Parks finished T3 in this event in 2017 and T10 in 2018.

 

• 35-time CGA Champion, Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C. and six-time CGA Champion, Don Detweiler of Raleigh, N.C. Simson, the all-time CGA title leader, and his partner Detweiler captured the 2018 Carolinas Super Senior Four-Ball title. Last year, the duo finished a respectable T4 in this event.
   
• Five-time CGA champ Ron Carpenter of Creedmoor, N.C. and Garrett Garland of Huntersville, N.C. Carpenter and Garland teamed up in 2017 to win the Carolinas Senior Four-Ball. Last year, Carpenter and his partner Gary Brown finished solo third in this event.

 

About the North Carolina Super Senior Four-Ball Championship

The North Carolina Super Senior Four-Ball Championship is conducted at 36 holes of four-ball stroke play. Entry is open to any male amateur golfer age 65 and older who is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index®. Teams may sign up for the Championship Division or 70+ age Division.
