Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C. dominated the field at the 52nd Twin States Junior Girls' Championship to earn her fifth CGA title. Playing in her last CGA junior event before heading to college this fall, she left her mark by carding a two-under-par 143.

In the opening round of competition, Hawkins carded a tournament-low score of two-under-par 68 to take a six-stroke lead over the rest of the field. She carded four birdies and an eagle in the round and attributed her impressive performance to her putting.

"I putted really well, which was big," Hawkins said. "I gave myself some chances all day and the putts were rolling in."

In the second and final round of competition, Hawkins began her round similar to her first and carded two birdies on the front nine. On the back nine, she said she hit a few shots that did not go exactly where she wanted, but she was able to remain steady. Her round was enough to allow her to maintain her significant lead over the rest of the field, and she was the only player to finish the tournament in red numbers.

This tournament marked the last CGA junior event for Hawkins of her career before she heads to Campbell University this fall. Though she is sad to see her junior days come to a close, she is happy with the ending.

"It's sad, but its also nice to finish my last one with a win," Hawkins said. "It's just really exciting, and I'm really blessed. It's been awesome."

Two players finished tied for second place five shots behind Hawkins. Elle Johnson of Inman, S.C. and Abigail Schimpf of Daniel Island, S.C. carded a three-over-par 147 for the tournament. Schimpf carded a two-under-par 70 with five birdies and earned the lowest score of the second round.

The championship format is 36 holes of stroke play competition.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer ages 12 to 18 as of August 1, 2018, who has not started college, maintains a residence in North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank Spring Valley Country Club for hosting this year's event. Our tournament would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of its club members and staff. A special thank you Head Golf Professional, Roger Mack and Course Superintendent, Jason Smith.
