It was a tight competition until the very last match at the 17th Mid-Atlantic Girls' Challenge Matches at Indian Creek Golf and Yacht Club in Kilmarnock, VA, but the Carolinas team took home the trophy for the third straight year.

The Carolinas team jumped to an early lead on the first day of competition during the four-ball match play. Gracyn Burgess of Lexington, S.C. and Alexis Sudjianto of Charlotte, N.C. notched the first point for the Carolinas team after cruising to a 5 and 4 victory. Abigail Schimpf of Daniel Island, S.C. and Sasha Hayes of Winston-Salem, N.C. also notched a point for the team with their 4 and 3 victory. Katherine Schuster of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. and Maria Atwood of Holly Springs, N.C. had a tight match until Schuster sank a putt on the 17th green to guarantee the win.

The impressive four-ball round gave the Carolinas team the edge headed into the second day of competition of individual singles match play with a 3-1 lead. In singles match play, Schuster secured the first point of the day for the Carolinas after she defeated Sophie Simon, 4 and 3. The Virginia/Maryland Team won three straight matches, but Atwood, who held the lead throughout her entire match, secured a fifth point for the Carolinas with her 4 and 2 victory over Victoria Tip-Aucha. Emily Hawkins of Lexington, N.C., who served as the team's anchor in the final match of the day, clinched the winning point for the Carolinas team on the 16th green when she sank a putt to win her match, 3 and 2 over Diana Domenech.

The Virginia/Maryland team notched two more matches after Jenny Hua just outlasted Burgess on the final hole and both teams ended competition with six points. Although the matches ended with both teams at six points, the Virginias needed 6.5 points to win the cup. Therefore, the Carolinas team retains the cup and brings it back South for the third straight year.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the Virginia State Golf Association and the Indian Creek Golf and Yacht Club for hosting this year's event. This tournament would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the staff and club members. The Carolinas team would like to thank team captains, Vicki DiSantis and Teddy Stockwell for their support and guidance throughout the weekend.

Format: Match play team competition of junior girls from Maryland and Virginia versus junior girls from North Carolina and South Carolina.
